
Seventh Inning Home Run Helps Push Huskies Past No. 12 Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The No. 9 Washington Huskies defeated the No. 12 Alabama Crimson Tide, 3-2, Friday night at Rhoads Stadium.
A late two-run home run from Kirstyn Thomas helped boost the Huskies past the Tide after the game was tied at 1-1 for three innings.
Sophomore ace Taran Alvelo, (20-6) went three full innings before giving up a single hit. She collected seven strikeouts and issued only two walks during her seven innings in the circle.
For the second day in a row, the Huskies were the first to score, this time off an RBI-single from catcher Morganne Flores in the fourth inning. The sophomore brought in Sis Bates, who previously singled and advanced to second on a throwing error from the Tide's shortstop.
In the bottom of the frame, Alabama got its first hit off Alvelo with a single from Raegan Dykes. She was plated on a double from Gabby Callaway to tie the game at 1-1.
With runners on the corners in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Alabama offense threatened to score. The runner on first attempted to steal second, allowing the runner on third to break for home. However, the Husky defense put a stop to the play and tagged the runner out at home to end the inning.
Washington took the lead in the top of the seventh inning off Thomas' two-run, one-out homer to right field. She brought in Trysten Melhart who previously singled and stole second.
Alabama scored one more run in the bottom of the seventh inning off an RBI-single. But with the tying run on base, Alabama's Marisa Runyon flied out to Kaija Gibson at left field to end the game, 3-2, Huskies.
Due to a storm headed Tuscaloosa's way tomorrow, Saturday's series finale has been up to 2 p.m. PT/4 p.m. CT at Rhoads Stadium.
