Pack The Cut For 106th Annual Cal Dual
April 18, 2017 | Men's Rowing
SEATTLE โ The West Coast's most celebrated collegiate rowing regatta, the "Washington - Cal Dual", returns to the Montlake Cut this Saturday, April 22, with races against California starting at 9:00 a.m. PT. Fans are encouraged to Pack the Cut before the UW Football Spring Preview, which starts at noon after the conclusion of the Cal Dual. Washington Rowing is partnering with the Pac-12 Networks to broadcast the regatta, in its entirety, live on Twitter.
ย
For the first time on record, the Cal Dual regatta will feature the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked teams on both the men's and the women's sides. For the men, the No. 2-ranked Huskies, who are coming off a sweep at the Stanford Invitational, will take on the No. 1-ranked California crew. On the women's side, Washington is ranked No. 1 and the Golden Bears are No. 2 in the most recent CRCA/USRowing rankings.
ย
The California men and women are both coming off national championships in 2016. Last season the Golden Bears snapped Washington's unprecedented streak of five IRA national championships in a row.
ย
"I think it is an incredible showcase to have these two teams race on the Montlake Cut," said men's head coach Michael Callahan. "This could be the fastest boat race in the world this weekend."
ย
"Cal is the reigning national champion, so we expect that this race is going to be a smoker and it is going to take everything we have," said women's head coach Yasmin Farooq. "It is one of the oldest rivalries in the sport for the men and it is just as intense of a rivalry for the women."
ย
Last year at the Cal Dual in Redwood Shores, Calif., the Huskies won five out of nine races under fast conditions. Washington took the first four races of the morning, with victories in both the men's and women's third varsity eights and varsity fours. In addition, the women's second varsity eight defeated the Bears by over three seconds.
UW MEN vs. CAL
The Washington-California men's varsity eight dual series dates back to 1903, with 105 meetings between the two schools. At stake is the Schoch Cup, named after Delos Schoch of Washington's class of 1936. Washington holds a 73-31-1 record in the dual meeting, having won eight in a row prior to California's victories the last two seasons.
ย
Washington's varsity eight has been nothing short of dominant over the last six years, winning five IRA national championships in a row from 2011-2015. In those years California placed second just once (2015).
ย
"This race is chock full of Under-23 World Champions and an Olympian," added Callahan. "It is probably as fierce of a race that you could dial up."
ย
Washington's junior varsity eight series with Cal dates back to 1939, with the UW winning 48 of 71 races. The Huskies won seven straight from 2009-2015, before the Golden Bears won in 2016.
ย
The UW's freshman eight race began in 1939, with Washington wining 56 of 74 races, including a dominating win in 2011. The Huskies' longest winning streak in the freshman eight was 15 consecutive from 1966 through 1980.
ย
"California is only making us better," said Callahan. "We had to rise to it. They have a new level and they are the reigning national champions, and it is our challenge to match that."
ย
"Last year we were a really young team," Callahan added. "This year we are learning a lot of good lessons and putting them to use and are a much better team for it. This is our next step."
UW WOMEN vs. CAL
Washington and California have a women's varsity eight rivalry that dates back to 1977. The Huskies will race for a chance to claim the Simpson Cup, which was donatedย by longtime Washington supporters Hunter and Dottie Simpson, whose daughter Anne rowed at Cal. Washington leads the series 23-17, and at one point won 22 of the past 23 races from 1981-2003. The Huskies' last victory in the varsity eight came in 2013. California has won 12 of the last 13.
ย
"We're excited to race with the support of the Husky Nation on our home course," said Farooq. "We're lucky to have such enthusiastic and knowledgeable fans and alums. Each boat will be racing knowing that they are behind us."
ย
The second varsity eight series against California began in 1975, with Washington winning 27 of 38 races. The Golden Bears won in 2004, snapping an 11-race UW win streak that was the Huskies' longest in the series.
ย
In the third varsity eight (formerly the Novice Eight), the Huskies hold the 26-12 edge, dating back to 1977. The UW won 11 in a row from 1990-2011. ย The Huskies won the race last year at Redwood Shores.
ย
With two weeks since their last regatta, Farooq and the team have been focused on improvement heading into this weekend's races with Cal.
ย
"I feel like this is going to be a great test for us and it comes at the perfect time," added Farooq. "I imagine they feel the same way."
