Chibuogwu Sets Record, Neale And Gilbert Deliver
April 14, 2017 | Track & Field
SEATTLE – The Huskies got their first school record of the outdoor season today by way of junior Onyie Chibuogwu at the Beach Invitational, while All-American distance runners Amy-Eloise Neale and Colby Gilbert added to their string of outstanding races at the Mt. SAC Relays tonight. Washington competed at three different meets in Southern California during the busy day.
Chibuogwu, the Shoreline, Wash. native, broke through in the hammer throw today at the Beach Invitational in Long Beach with a nine-foot career-best. She was third on the Husky top-10 list coming in with a 189-foot PR, but launched one 198-feet, 11-inches today to break the 2012 mark of 193-10 set by Elisa Bryant. Chibuogwu now ranks third in the Pac-12 this season with the toss.
At the Mt. SAC Relays at El Camino College, Neale, who already ranks second in the NCAA this season at 5,000-meters, dropped back down to 1,500-meters today and went to No. 3 in the NCAA in that event, as she ran a new career-best time of 4:13.81, just bettering her old best of 4:13.93 set in the NCAA semifinals last season.
Gilbert raced for the first time this outdoor season tonight, and showed no rust after a month away from racing. In the elite section of the men's 5k, Gilbert took third overall in 13:38.68, the third time in his career that he's gone sub-13:40. That time will jump Gilbert right up to No. 4 in the NCAA this outdoor campaign.
Another new top-10 mark came from the Husky women's 4x100-meter relay, which won its section with a big season-best. The group of Sarah Stavig, Cydnicia Wade, Imani Apostol, and Kennadi Bouyer clocked 45.34 seconds, the new fourth-fastest mark in Husky history.
Shortly after that relay, redshirt freshman Darhian Mills lowered her 400-meter hurdles PR for the third straight time, breaking the 59-second mark in the process. She took second overall in 58.89 seconds, improving her No. 8 mark on the top-10 list.
Sophomore Hannah Derby won her heat in the women's 800-meters and crept ever closer to the 2:06 range, as she notched a new personal-best of 2:07.13. On the men's side, Mason Fletcher had a new season's-best time of 1:51.45.
Bouyer doubled back after the relay and ran the open 100-meters, going 11.61 seconds for eighth overall. Senior Lucas Strong ran a 10.70 in the men's 100-meters, and Jacopo Spanò went 21.32 in the 200-meters, just off his season-best.
Mills also had a 14.11 time in the 100-meter hurdles, while Eric Simpson went 14.85 in the 110m hurdles.
Late in the evening the Husky mid-distance crew posted some more impressive times as the Bryan Clay Invitational wrapped up at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Stadium. Senior Blake Nelson gave his season a big boost as he ran seven seconds faster in the 1,500-meters compared to his last run at the Stanford Invite. Nelson ran 3:43.89 tonight, less than a second off his career-best. Junior Johnathan Stevens also ran for the first time this track season, opening with a solid 3:47.94, while redshirt freshman Connor Morello also got a 1,500m PR of 3:49.99.
Back at Long Beach, junior Carey Campbell had a solid hammer throw of 188-6, his second-best mark of the season. In the javelin, senior All-American Carson Fuller made his first appearance of the season, posting a best mark of 204-3. Sophomore Denham Patricelli sent one 197-5 for his best of the day. In the women's javelin, freshman Emmy Engle threw 133-4 and sophomore Katherine Taylor went 127-5.
Late in the night came a few more 5,000-meter runs back at Mt. SAC as Kaylee Flanagan came through in a time of 16:49.67. Mahmoud Moussa clocked a significant PR of 14:11.22 in his first 5k of the season, a career-best by nearly 20 seconds. Charlie Barringer also ran his second 5k of the season in 14:24.62.
Saturday will bring the week to a close as the Dawgs finish up at both the Beach Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays.
