Washington Takes Series In Eugene After A 5-3 Win In Extra Innings
April 15, 2017 | Softball
EUGENE, Ore. – Morganne Flores' three doubles and four RBIs helped propel Washington past Oregon in nine innings for a 5-3 Husky win Saturday afternoon. The win marked the Huskies' first series win over the Ducks since 2011.
No. 12 Washington improved to 31-10 overall and 8-7 in the Pac-12 after the win over the No. 4-ranked Ducks.
Taran Alvelo (19-6) pitched all nine innings for the Purple and Gold, striking out 12 batters and allowing only five hits. The sophomore also appeared at the plate for the first time in her career.
Flores led the Husky offense with her four RBIs and went 3-for-5. Ali Aguilar went 4-for-5 and scored two runs on the day.
The teams had a scoreless first three innings, but it was Washington who brought in the first run of the day in the fourth inning. Flores led off with a double to right field. Amirah Milloy entered as a pinch runner for Flores, and a fielding error by the Oregon's Lauren Lindvall at second allowed her to come home.
Washington's 1-0 lead was short-lived as the Ducks' Nikki Udria hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the fourth.
Oregon added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend its lead to 3-1 off a two-out RBI single.
The Huskies' late rally started with a double hit by Aguilar. Sis Bates reached on a fielding error by first baseman Mia Camuso, moving Aguilar to third, and Casey Stangel grounded out to the pitcher but pushed Bates to second. Flores hit her second double of the day, bringing in Aguilar and Bates to tie the game at 3-3.
The Oregon offense was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh, forcing the teams go to extra innings.
Flores' brought in the game winning runs with her third double of the day. She brought in Aguilar and Bates who previously singled and reached on a fielder's choice, respectively.
Alvelo shut down the Ducks' offense in their final at bat, striking out two and inducing a line drive to Taylor Van Zee, who made an incredible, back-handed catch.
The Huskies will take a break from conference play next week as they head to Alabama to face Alabama-Birmingham and Alabama. The non-conference series will start with a 4 p.m. PT game on Thursday, April 20. Washington will then face No. 9 Alabama on Friday and Saturday at 3 p.m. PT and 11 a.m. PT, respectively. The games will be aired live on the SEC Network+.
