April 13, 2017 | Women's Basketball
NEW YORK CITY – Kelsey Plum was selected by the San Antonio Stars with the No. 1 overall pick while Chantel Osahor was picked in the second round and 21st overall by the Chicago Sky in the 2017 Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) Draft held Thursday (April 13) at Samsung 837 in New York City.
Plum is the first No. 1 draft pick in program history and becomes the highest drafted basketball player in Washington history, male or female. She is just the fourth Pac-12 player to be selected No. 1.
This is the first time in program history Washington has had multiple players selected in the WNBA Draft as Plum and Osahor become the fourth and fifth Huskies to be selected all-time.
Most recently, Talia Walton was picked in the third round and 29th overall by the Los Angeles Sparks last year. Rhonda Smith and Megan Franza were the other Huskies to be selected with Smith being taken in the third round and 46th overall by the Sacramento Monarchs in 2000, while Franza was taken in the fourth round and 61st overall by the Phoenix Mercury in 2001.
Plum swept the 2017 national player of the year honors after having one of the most historic seasons in women's college basketball. She broke the NCAA record for both points scored in a season and for a career.
In addition to her scoring prowess, the Poway, Calif. native also led the team in assists and steals while averaging 5.1 rebounds per game which was tied for second-most on this Washington squad that won a program-record 29 games.
Osahor is Washington's all-time leading rebounder with 1,253 in her career. She tied the Pac-12 record for most rebounds in a season with 519 this past year.
In her senior season, the Phoenix, Ariz. native led the nation in rebounds per game (15.8) and double-doubles (30). She registered 20 or more boards in eight contests, including a Pac-12 record 30 against Washington State. Osahor was also second on the team in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game and assists (140).
The duo were both named to the 10-member WBCA Coaches' All-America Team this season.
Overall, six Huskies have played in the WNBA: Laure Savasta (Sacramento Monarchs, 1997), Rhonda Smith (Monarchs, 2000), Jamie Redd (Seattle Storm, 2000-02), Amber Hall (Portland Fire, 2002), Giuliana Mendiola (Monarchs, 2004) and Kristen O'Neil (Storm, 2008).
