EUGENE, Ore. – No. 12 Washington handed No. 4 Oregon their first home loss of the season after edging them, 4-2, Thursday night at Jane Sanders Stadium.
Seniors Ali Aguilar and Casey Stangel led the Husky offense once again, each going 2-for-3 Thursday night. Aguilar sent a ball soaring into the stands behind centerfield for her eighth home run of the season.
Sophomore Taran Alvelo earned the win in the circle and improved to 18-5 on the season. She allowed only two runs off four hits and recorded seven strikeouts in her seven innings on the mound.
"Tonight was a great team win for us," said head coach Heather Tarr. "Taran threw well and got the win tonight. She really attacked the strike zone with those seven strikeouts. Casey had a great throw from left field to home plate to cut off a run. Finally, our offense performed well and scored first which was huge. It was a great team effort and team win."
In the first inning, Stangel got on base with a double to left field to get the game started. Next up was Morganne Flores who reached on a throwing error by the Ducks' shortstop, giving Stangel the opportunity to run home from second. The Huskies ended the inning ahead, 1-0.
Alvelo held the Ducks hitless until the fourth inning, when the Ducks followed a hit batter with three-consecutive singles to score their first run. With the bases loaded, Alvelo walked in the second run to give Oregon a 2-1 lead.
Their one-run lead didn't last long when Aguilar blasted a ball over the fence for a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. She brought in Kelly Burdick, who previously reached on a fielder's choice.
Washington extended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh inning after Burdick led off with a bunt single and advanced after Aguilar drew a walk. Sis Bates followed with a single to load the bases. Stangel stepped up to the plate with no outs and hit a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Burdick to score.
In the seventh, Alvelo issued a two-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate. But she got cleanup hitter Nikki Udria to flyout to end the game.
The top-25 matchup will continue tomorrow, Friday, April 14 for a 7 p.m. game at Jane Sanders Stadium. The series will conclude on Sunday, April 15 at 12 p.m. PT. The remaining two games will be aired live on the Pac-12 Network with Ann Schatz and Washington alumnae, Danielle Lawrie, on the air.
