Plum Wins Dawn Staley Award
March 31, 2017 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA -- Senior Kelsey Plum of the University of Washington women's basketball team was tabbed as the winner of the 2017 Dawn Staley Award, as announced by the award committee on Friday (March 31).
The Dawn Staley Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate guard in the country; a player who exemplifies the skills that Staley possessed during her career: ball handling, scoring, her ability to distribute the basketball and her will to win.
Plum is the first player in program history to win the award.
"For four years Kelsey has been exactly the kind of ambassador women's basketball needs," Dawn Staley said. "She's exciting, she's talented, and most of all, she's driven. You don't become the highest scoring player in the history of the game without putting in the work, off the court, every single day. No one is more deserving of this award because no one has worked harder for it. Kelsey is the type of player young girls around the world can look up to, and we're all looking forward to seeing what she does next."
The Associated Press' Player of the Year enjoyed a stellar senior campaign in which she averaged an NCAA-leading 31.7 points per game to go along with 5.1 rebounds and 4.8 assists. In total, she led the Pac-12 Conference in points scored (1,109), 3-pointers (115), and free throws (236). Plum also led the team in assists (168) and steals (52).
Plum, who was a unanimous pick on the AP All-America first team, became the NCAA's all-time career leading scorer this season, ending her career with 3,527 points.
The 5-8 guard was also tabbed as a USBWA and WBCA All-American.
Dawn Staley will present the award to Plum during the Phoenix Club of Philadelphia's Dawn Staley Award reception on Thursday (April 6) at 6 p.m. ET, at the prestigious Union League of Philadelphia.
