SEATTLE -- Senior Kelsey Plum scored 29 points and fellow senior Chantel Osahor accounted for her 28th double-double of the season to lead the No. 3 seed Washington past No. 14 seed Montana State on Saturday (March 18) at Alaska Airlines Arena. The Huskies pulled away in the second half to beat the Bobcats 91-63 and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament against No. 6 seed Oklahoma on Monday (March 20).
Washington put four in double figures and 11 in the scoring column, led by Plum, the nation's leading scorer, who scored 17 of her 29 points in the second half. The Poway, Calif. native also added five rebounds.
"We hit some shots in the second half that we weren't hitting in the first and we just kind of started getting on a roll from there," Plum said.
Osahor, the nation's leading rebounder, tallied a game-high 19 boards to go along with 16 points and a team-high three assists.
Freshman Aarion McDonald contributed 15 points and seven rebounds and junior Natalie Romeo added 11 points to round out Washington's double-digit scoring efforts. Romeo hit one of her three three-pointers in the first quarter to reach 1,000 points for her career.
The Huskies tied a season-low with just six turnovers compared to Montana State's 14 miscues. Washington also outrebounded the Bobcats 51-40.
Peyton Ferris scored a game-high 33 points to keep Montana State (25-7) hanging around into the third quarter.
The Bobcats hit a three as time expired to take a 17-16 lead after one quarter of play.
Washington outscored the visitors 22-10 in the second quarter to take an 11-point lead at the break.
The Bobcats pulled within 40-34 in the opening minutes of the second half before the Huskies started pulling away. Osahor scored seven consecutive points, including her first three-pointer, and a three from Romeo pushed Washington's lead to 59-40. The lead grew to as many as 31 in the fourth quarter.
Next up, Washington will face Oklahoma for the third straight season. The Huskies and Sooners played a home-and-home series the previous two years.
