March 10, 2017 | Softball
SEATTLE, Wash. – Washington softball coach Heather Tarr earned her 500th career win Friday night as the No. 8 Huskies beat No. 7 Minnesota, 3-2, in the UW's opening game of the Husky Classic.
Single runs in each of the first two innings and a leadoff home run from Morganne Flores in the bottom of the sixth inning helped Tarr, the Huskies' 13th-year head coach, record the milestone win. Washington improved to 18-3 on the season.
Nine Huskies pounded out 11 hits. Casey Stangel and Kelly Burdick each collected two hits on the night.
The Golden Gophers (19-1) snagged an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning off a two-RBI single. Sophomore ace Taran Alvelo (11-1) escaped two jams with bases loaded to hold the No. 7 team to just a two-run lead.
The Huskies answered back in the bottom of the frame when Ali Aguilar was issued a walk and was then plated by a Julia DePonte single.
In the second inning, Kaija Gibson singled through the left side and came home one a double from Aguilar, tying the game at 2-2.
After four scoreless innings, Flores went yard for her fifth home run of the season, breaking the 2-2 tie in the bottom of the sixth.
Alvelo struck out the first two batters in the ninth and, after giving up an infield single, struck out Maddie Houlihan to wrap up the historic win.
The Husky win snapped Minnesota's season-opening win streak at 19 games, the longest win streak in Gophers history.
The Huskies, who are also taking on Penn State Friday night, will return to action Saturday in the second day of the Husky Classic when they take on South Dakota at 2:45 p.m. at Husky Softball Stadium.
