December 12, 2017 | Football
The American Football Coaches Association and The Sporting News today named Dante Pettis to its All-America first team, meaning that the Husky senior has earned consensus All-America status, as he made four of the five NCAA-recognized teams.
The NCAA acknowledges five All-America teams when it comes to determining consensus All-America: American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football Writers Association of America, and The Sporting News. Pettis has earned first-team honors from The Sporting News, Walter Camp, the FWAA and the AFCA. He was also an AP second-teamer.
Also in the past week, Pettis was named a first-team All-America returner by USA Today, Pro Football Focus, TheAthletic.com, Sports Illustrated, Bleacher Report and SBNation.
Pettis, a senior from San Clemente, Calif., broke the NCAA record for punt returns for touchdown in a career, with nine. This season, Pettis returned four punts for scores, including the record-break in the 38-3 win over Oregon. He also tied an NCAA record by scoring on a punt return in three consecutive games (Rutgers, Montana, Fresno State) and broke the Pac-12 record for career punt return yards, with 1,274. He enters the postseason as the NCAA leader in punt return average, at 20.4 yards per return.
Additionally, Pettis is the Huskies' top receiver in 2017 and earned first-team All-Pac-12 at both wide receiver and return specialist. He leads the Huskies with 62 receptions for 721 yards and seven scores. He ranks in the top five in UW history in career receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
