The Huskies face five 20-plus win teams in 11 non-conference slate
SEATTLE – The University of Washington women's basketball team announced its 2017-18 Pac-12 schedule including 11 non-conference contests and 14 games televised on the Pac-12 Network.
The 11-game non-conference slate features seven games against teams that played in the postseason a season ago including three who qualified for the NCAA Tournament — BYU (20 wins, WNIT), Ohio State (28 wins, NCAA), Creighton (24 wins, NCAA), Texas (25 wins, NCAA), Idaho (19 wins, WBI), Boise State (25 wins, NCAA) and Seattle (15 wins, WNIT).
"We have put together a challenging schedule with tough competition both at home and on the road," said first-year head coach Jody Wynn. "This will be an opportunity to face high-level teams including a pair of NCAA tournament teams in Vegas, a top-25 program in Ohio State and North Carolina in Myrtle Beach. These games will be great preparation for our Pac-12 season."
Washington's 2017-18 season tips off with a pair of home contests against Idaho State (Nov. 12) and BYU (Nov. 15).
The Huskies then hit the road for their next four games, first making the trek to Columbus, Ohio to face Ohio State on Nov. 19. It will be Washington's first game at OSU since the 2006-07 season.
UW remains on the road that week, traveling to Las Vegas over Thanksgiving to participate in the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout. The Huskies face a pair of 2016-17 NCAA Tournament teams in Creighton on Nov. 24 and Texas on Nov. 25.
Following the shootout, the Huskies travel to Moscow, Idaho for its first of two road trips to the Gem State, squaring off against Idaho on Dec. 1. After hosting Portland (Dec. 3) in a game on the Pac-12 Networks, Washington returns to the state of Idaho for a second time to face Boise State (Dec. 7) in Boise.
The Huskies host Grand Canyon (Dec. 10) at Alaska Airlines Arena before traveling to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to play North Carolina (Dec. 17). In just the second meeting between the two schools, the Huskies and Tar Heels will face off at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.
Washington closes out the non-conference schedule with a home game against Seattle University (Dec. 20).
The Huskies open Pac-12 play on the road against the Oregon schools, taking on Oregon State on Dec. 29 before facing Oregon on Dec. 31.
Washington rings in the new year with a pair of home games, welcoming Utah on Jan. 5 and Colorado on Jan. 7.
After a trip to the Bay area to take on California (Jan. 12) and Stanford (Jan. 14), the Huskies take on cross-state rival Washington State in a home-and-home series. Washington is at Washington State on Jan. 17, then hosts the Cougars on Jan. 21.
Washington remains at home for its next two games, taking on UCLA on Jan. 26 and USC on Jan. 28 in the only two meetings of the season.
The Huskies head back on the road to play their only games against the Arizona schools, facing Arizona State on Feb. 2 and Arizona Feb. 4, before returning home to face the Oregon schools again, hosting Oregon on Feb. 9 and Oregon State on Feb. 11.
The final road trip of the conference season has Washington traveling to Colorado on Feb. 16 and Utah on Feb. 18.
The Huskies then close out the regular season at home with Stanford on Feb. 23 and California on Feb. 25.
The Pac-12 Tournament will once again be held in Seattle at KeyArena March 2-5.
"Playing in the number one conference in the country, every opponent will provide terrific competition and will be a challenge for our young team," said Wynn. "Playing against the top teams in the nation in our 18 conference games will force us to continue to improve game in and game out."
Washington is set to begin its first season under the leadership of head coach Jody Wynn. The team returns six letterwinners including seniors Mackenzie Wieburg and Jenna Moser, juniors Hannah Johnson and Deja Strother and sophomores Mai-Loni Henson and Amber Melgoza.
The Huskies will also look for contributions from six eligible newcomers -- freshmen Kierra Collier, Alexis Griggsby, Khayla Rooks, Missy Peterson and Fapou Semebene, as well as redshirt freshman GiGi Garcia who was sidelined with an injury last season.
