January 30, 2017 | Men's Basketball
SPRINGFIELD, Mass – University of Washington Markelle Fultz has been selected as one of the 10 finalists for the Bob Cousy Award, given annually to the nation's best point guard.
Fultz is one of four freshman on the midseason list and one of two players from the Pac-12 Conference. He is joined by Lonzo Ball (UCLA), Joel Berry II (North Carolina), Jalen Brunson (Villanova), De'Aaron Fox (Kentucky), Frank Mason III (Kansas), Monte Morris (Iowa State), Dennis Smith, Jr. (N.C. State), Melo Trimble (Maryland) and Nigel Williams-Goss (Gonzaga).
The Husky freshman is currently leading the Pac-12 in scoring, averaging 23.3 points per game and is also putting up six assists and 6.1 rebounds per outing while shooting 48.2 percent from the field. Additionally, he's the only player in the NCAA averaging 20-6-6.
Fultz has put together 20 double-digit scoring efforts in 21 games, 15 of which were 20 points or more and five were 30+point outings. His five games of 30 or more points ties for the fifth-most by a Husky in program history and three of those efforts came in three-straight contests. Additionally, he's recorded four double-doubles, two of which were points and assists. The freshman has led the Huskies in points and assists in 14 of UW's 21 games and led in points, rebounds and assists seven times.
Fultz's 127 assists this season are 25 away from setting the UW freshman single-season record and his 6.0 average per game ranks second in the Pac-12. He's also leading the conference in minutes played at 35.6 while ranking sixth in assist to turnover ratio (2.0).
Named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor is now in its 14th year recognizing the top point guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just 10.
In March, five finalists will be presented to Bob Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committee for the 2017 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. The winner of this year's award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show live from The Novo by Microsoft in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, April 7. Broadcast information will be released at a later date.
