SEATTLE - The UW Invitational, one of the marquee meets in the NCAA indoor season, goes this Friday and Saturday in the Dempsey. Washington ramps up its season along with a loaded field of more than a thousand athletes.
Competition begins on Friday at 1 p.m. with the first events in the multis, and Friday's action will also include the first distance medley relays and 5,000-meter runs of the season, as the majority of UW's distance crew gets onto the track for the first time this season. Also on Friday will be the 200-meter dashes, the women's weight throw, and first flights of pole vault, and 3,000-meters. Saturday's full day opens at 9 a.m. while the top-two sections of all running events from 400-meters up to 3,000-meters will be grouped together starting at 3:15 p.m.
Nearly eighty Huskies are slated to compete this weekend. Washington heads into the second meet of its season ranked 21st on the women's side and 25th on the men's side. The Pac-12 will be well represented in the Dempsey as Arizona, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford, Utah, and Washington State will all have multiple entries. Also, numerous elite pros and U.S. Olympians will be mixing it up again this weekend, including Kate Grace, Andrea Geubelle, Andrew Wheating, Barbara Nwaba, Logan Cunningham, and some elite Husky alumni in Baylee Mires and Norris Frederick.
Huskies to watch in the distance events this weekend include All-American Amy-Eloise Neale in the 3,000-meters, running in the top section along with freshman Kaitlyn Neal. Senior Kaylee Flanagan will go in the top 5,000-meter heat on Friday night. Sophomore Hannah Derby will step up to 800-meters after an impressive heat win at 600-meters at the Indoor Preview. For the men, Colby Gilbert will shoot for an NCAA qualifier in the 3k coming off his 3:58 mile run two weeks ago. Joining him in the fast section will be Fred Huxham and Andrew Gardner in their openers. Keith Williams and Mahmoud Moussa will chase mile PRs, while Mason Fletcher runs in the top heat of the 800-meters and All-American Blake Nelson is entered one heat earlier.
In the sprints, All-American senior Kennadi Bouyer will move up to 200-meters after opening with a 7.29 60-meter time that ranks fifth in the NCAA currently. Sarah Stavig, Laura Anuakpado, Cydnicia Wade, Whitney Diggs, Carolyn Birkenfeld and Darhian Mills are all entered in the 200m on Friday night as are Jacopo Spano, Jason Palmer, Michael Thomas, Lucas Strong, Ryan Croson, and Khalil Winfrey for the men. Senior Alexis Ford is entered in the top heat of the women's 400-meters, with Imani Apostol also in the field, while senior Andrew Brown is in the top men's 400m heat. Darhian Mills and Eric Simpson will look to build off their season-opening PRs in the 60m hurdles.
In the men's jumps, Cole Jensen and Bryce Fausset are entered in the high jump, while the pole vault features Chase Smith, Lev Marcus, Blaise Black, freshmen Zach Shugart and Jacob Bowler in the top flight. Junior Casey Burns, No. 2 in school history, is entered in the triple jump. The women's pole vault will be one to watch as usual with Elizabeth Quick looking to move up the NCAA rankings going against a field that includes four post-collegiate women who were regular scorers at NCAAs, plus Husky All-American Kristina Owsinski competing unattached in her second meet back from achilles injury. Mayson Douglass is coming off an indoor PR in the high jump, Alanna Coker will go in both the long and triple jumps, Kate Adler is in the top women's long jump flight, and Savannah Burr will triple jump unattached, as she has only outdoor eligibility.
In the throws, junior Onyie Chibuogwu will look to make a mark in the women's weight throw, junior Carey Campbell goes in the men's weight, and freshman Jose Padilla will represent the Dawgs in the men's shot.
The first multi-events of the season will see sophomore Carly Lester try out her first pentathlon, along with junior Ericka Budinich and freshman Elinor Jones Toutant. Pac-12 decathlon scorer Josh Gordon will go in his first heptathlon, an event he ranks third in UW history.
