Burleson Crowned All-Around Champ, Duranczyk Wins Bars At Cal
January 22, 2017 | Gymnastics
BERKELEY, Calif – Washington gymnastics enjoyed a successful night at Haas Pavilion, as the GymDawgs scored a season-high 195.325 and improved their scores in vault (49.000) and bars (48.925). Senior Kaitlyn Duranczyk won the bars title, tying a career-high 9.925, and Hailey Burleson won the all-around for the first time in her career with a personal best 39.350.
"Our goal was to improve; to get a little better from our first meet," said head coach Elise Ray "I'm proud of the team's intention to do that. We had too many mistakes on floor though; we missed an opportunity of a team score that is more like where I would like the team to be for our second meet. So we get back to work. "
Duranczyk's 9.925 was her highest score on bars this season and tied her score at the 2016 Pac-12 Championships last season. It also puts her in the nation's top 20 individuals on bars. Burleson placed second on beam after putting up a 9.875, a new career-high. Junior Zoey Schaefer tied for third on beam with a 9.85.
Sophomore Kristyn Hoffa placed second on floor, scoring a personal best 9.875, while Burleson tied for third on floor with a 9.85. Hoffa's second place 9.85 on vault rounded out the GymDawgs' top-3 finishers of the meet.
"It's very exciting to see so many individual successes, especially against another PAC 12 program," said Ray "It's a huge boost of confidence for them. Most of these girls are making huge improvement from last season, and that's what we need: each individual getting better for the success of the whole team."
