A Perfect Weekend For The Huskies
September 18, 2016 | Men's Soccer
SEATTLE, WASH. β The Washington men's soccer team improved to 5-2 after shutting out the College of Charleston, 2-0 on Sunday. The win marked second of the weekend.
"It was the first game in a while that we actually came out and started well," said head coach Jamie Clark. "It makes life easier when you're not starting from behind. The confidence builds as you play, you score the first goal and you regroup from there. Unfortunately, we didn't carry that into the second half. I think in the second half we felt comfortable but it was a false comfort leel when you're only up by two, and that put us in a few dangerous spots."
The Huskies' offense got started quickly, as Jaret Townsend and Beau Blanchard each took a shot in the first two minutes, but the College of Charleston's goalkeeper saved both.
The Huskies controlled the ball for the majority of the first half with fourteen shots and seven corner kicks. The Cougars' goalkeeper, Kevin Shields, however remained strong with six saves.
The team's persistence offensively paid off in the 20th minute when Scott Menzies made his first goal of the season. After a foul on College of Charleston, Menzies lined up for a penalty kick and didn't find the back of the net, but on the same ball he found himself inside the goal box and netted his second shot.
In the 38th minute the Huskies earned their seventh corner kick of the match taken by Handwalla Bwana. Bwana's ball found the feet of Garret Jackson who then kicked it in for a goal. The Huskies went into the half up, 2-0.
In the second half, the Huskies pushed the goalkeeper even more as they looked to extend their lead even further. They created numerous opportunities but were unable to convert them.
Red-shirt freshman Joey Parish had a breakout weekend as he recorded three shots in the match.
In the match the Huskies not only saw first season goals from Jackson and Menzies, but shots from nearly each man that set foot on the pitch.
