September 12, 2016 | Women's Golf
NEW ZEALAND – University of Washington national champion women's golfers Julianne Alvarez and Wenyung Keh will be two of the three representatives for New Zealand at the 2016 World Amateur Team Championships, which begin this week in Riviera Maya, Mexico, Sept. 14-17. The pair, who are about to start their sophomore campaign at Washington, join Chantelle Cassidy as they compete for the Espirito Santo Trophy at Mayakoba El Camaleon Golf Club.
Alvarez and Keh were integral in Washington first NCAA Championship in May as the two went undefeated in their matches during match play helping UW defeat Virginia, top-ranked UCLA and Stanford in the championship match.
The World Amateur Team Championships (WATC) are conducted by the International Golf Federation (formerly the World Amateur Golf Council), which comprises the national governing bodies of golf in more than 140 countries. The World Amateur Team Championships are a biennial international amateur golf competition rotated among three geographic zones of the world: Asia-Pacific, American and European-African.
Each team has two or three players and plays 18-holes of stroke play for four days. In each round, the total of the two lowest scores from each team constitutes the team score for the round. The four-day (72-hole) total is the team's score for the championship.
