Big Second Half Leads To 3-0 Win For UW
September 11, 2016 | Women's Soccer
PORTLAND – After being held off the scoreboard in the first half against Southern Utah, the Washington women's soccer team opened up the flood gates in the second with a 3-0 win at the Nike Portland Invitational on two goals by Becca Schoales and one by Isabella Castro.
The Huskies (5-1-1) picked up where they left off against St. John's in the first half of the match, creating tons of great opportunities on offense but unable to put one in the back of the net. Shannon Simon took the first shot of the game in the third minute, sending a ball just wide of the left goalpost. Fifteen minutes later midfielder Shaye Villanueva sent a ball just over the net on a cross in the box. With the first half nearing the end, Washington's best opportunity came in the 39th minute as a ball snuck behind the Southern Utah keeper, only to be booted out of danger by a defender.
"I think we started off playing OK, but as the game went on we went away from our game plan in the first half," said Washington head coach Lesle Gallimore. "In the first half we let ourselves get frustrated and I don't think we played all that great."
Just as they did in their match on Friday, the Huskies came out pressing on offense in the second half, getting to quick corner kicks within the first nine minutes. However, UW finally got their opportunity on goal as junior Becca Schoales lobbed a ball by the Southern Utah keeper into the corner of the net to give them a 1-0 lead.
"In the second half we kind of challenged the team to turn it up a notch and win the ball higher up the field," said Gallimore. "Once we got the one goal I felt we kind of took the wind out of Southern Utah's sails and we were able to keep pressing and creating."
As the second half rolled on the Dawgs continued their pressure, keeping the ball on the Southern Utah half of the pitch. Schoales continued to lead the attack sending two consecutive balls at the goal six minutes after her score, only to have them blocked and saved by the keeper. But her fourth shot on the day found the back of the net as she kicked a ball just past the goalkeeper and into an open net from eight yards out for her third goal on the season.
With just over ten minutes remaining in the match, freshman Isabella Castro began a run down the right side of the field, looking to send a cross into the box. However, instead of finding a teammate, the Rocklin, Calif. found the inside of the far post, sneaking a lob just over the keeper's head that bounced off the post and into the net to give UW the victory on a 3-0 final score.
This gives Washington their fifth win on the season, as they will head to Texas next weekend with a 5-1-1 record for two road matches. First up is Baylor in Waco, Texas on Friday September 16th, followed by a matchup against SMU in Dallas on Sunday the 18th.
