Fultz Scores 23 as Huskies Take Down the Mainland Eagles, 92-79

SEATTLE – University of Washington freshman Markelle Fultz posted his second 20+ scoring effort in three games as he led the Huskies with 23 points in a 92-79 victory over the Mainland Eagles, Sunday afternoon in Christchurch, New Zealand. Playing in front of a sold-out crowd of 1,500 at Cowles Stadium, Washington moved its foreign tour record to 2-1 before heading back to Australia tomorrow.
"That team we played today attempted to play more defense than the other two teams we played," said head coach Lorenzo Romar. "We had been used to coming down and having our way. I thought our guys adjusted better in the second half and understood that we had to have better ball movement and I thought we did that. They had really good shooters, they had five guys on the floor that could shoot it and I thought our guys adjusted to that also."
Fultz flirted with a double-double as he also added eight rebounds and five assists along with two steals and two highlight reel dunks. Freshman Carlos Johnson had his best game of the tour so far, powering his way to the basket for 13 points and nine rebounds, just missing a double-double while sophomore Noah Dickerson led the team in boards at 12 and added nine points.
"I thought Carlos played with tremendous energy," added Romar. "He went to the boards fearlessly and he really ran the floor well and was able to get himself some good decent buckets."
Playing in his hometown for the first time since moving to the United States, freshman Sam Timmins had a chance to show the huge amount of family, friends and former teammates just how much he's improved and finished with eight rebounds, six points and four blocks. Sophomore David Crisp also chipped in 13 points while Dominic Green had 10.
"Sam had his best game today and we were very excited for him to be able to play in front of his family and fans and hear the big cheers every time he went in," added Romar. "That's what we hoped would happen. That's one of the reasons we came here so Sam could come back home. For Sam to do what he did and come to UW without ever seeing the place, didn't even take a visit, that's something we'll never forget and this was kind of a reward for him to come back home."
The Mainland Eagles, coached by Sam's former coach Mark Dickel, kept the game close and only trailed by six at the end of the first quarter. Washington got scoring from eight of the nine who saw action in the first 10 minutes and were led by Green who went 3 of 3 to finish the quarter with seven points. The second quarter played much closer with UW coming out with a 15-14 advance to go into the half up 41-34.
In the third quarter, the Eagles were able to cut into the UW lead and head into the final period only down six 63-57 and added a quick bucket out of the break to make it 63-59. But Washington quickly responded with 16-3 run to take its biggest lead of the game at 81-62 with 5:29 remaining. Four of those points came in highlight reel fashion, first as David Crisp hit Markelle Fultz for the alley oops then as Fultz stole the ball on the next possession and went down for a one-handed slam that sent the crowd to its feet.
Washington closed the win out with five-straight points from Johnson for a final score of 92-79. The Huskies next head to Sydney where they will spend four days and take on the Sydney University Lions and the Sydney Comets before returning to the states.
