Destiny Julye's China Snapshots
July 15, 2016 | Volleyball
Sophomore outside hitter Destiny Julye traveled with a group of fellow Pac-12 players on a tour of China this summer, coinciding with the trip taken by teammates Tia Scambray and Courtney Schwan on the U.S. Collegiate Team. Now back in Seattle working the Husky volleyball camps, Julye talked about what she enjoyed most about the experience and looking forward to the upcoming season.
"I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to visit Shanghai, Nanjing, and Beijing with other members of the Pac-12 and represent Washington in China," said Julye. "The Chinese cuisine is delicious, the city is immersed in culture, and the main attractions are mind-blowing. On our off time, we were able to go to the markets to shop, tour the city at night, and really bond over dinner and dance parties on the bus. The competition was tough, and our mindset was to be flexible and fully engaged throughout the entire process in order to be successful. I'm incredibly grateful for the new friendships I've made, the opportunity to come play, and learn more about the Chinese culture."

I'd never been out of the country so this was a big first. It definitely exceeded my expectations. I kind of went in thinking we're just going to play volleyball and hopefully I get close to some of the girls, but honestly it was amazing. It felt like I just gained eleven awesome new friends that I've kept communicating with now. I think it would be awesome to travel more. I don't know what the future holds after U-Dub, but if the opportunity is there and it feels right I would love to do it for sure.

"We went to the silk market two or three times and got some really cool stuff, some designer bags or some stuff for my family. Some girls just got a few things and other girls went all-out and were saying how they had to save money next month to make up for it, but it was really cool."

"My favorite thing was the Great Wall. I got to do it alongside McKenzie, she's one of the middle blockers at Arizona. We just had some really awesome conversations while we were there, just talked about Jesus and getting to know each other, so that was a really sweet moment."

"I'm really excited for the upcoming season. It definitely came around really fast. In just three weeks we'll be out there on the court with our 2016 team so I'm very excited to see what we look like those first couple days. Just playing here at open gym during lunch I think we look great and we're not even working with the coaches yet so I'm excited for sure."
