Dawgs Headed To LA For Two Matches
October 18, 2016 | Women's Soccer
SEATTLE – After a tough road loss at Colorado last week, the Washington women's soccer team looks to rebound on a trip down to Los Angeles to face No. 12 UCLA on Thursday October 20th at 5 p.m., followed by No. 5 USC on Sunday October 23rd at 11 a.m.
With only five more matches remaining on their schedule, the Huskies (6-8-1, 1-5-0 Pac-12) are looking to finish their season strong beginning with two of the top-ranked teams in the country this weekend. Junior Shannon Simon leads the team with 14 points this year on seven goals, most recently scoring in back-to-back matches against Arizona State and Arizona. Juniors Becca Schoales and Kimberly Keever are second and third on the team in points respectively, with Keever scoring the lone goal in UW's match at Colorado last week.
Thursday's match with the No. 12 Bruins (10-3-1, 4-1-1 Pac-12) will feature one of the top-scorers in the conference in freshman midfielder Jessie Fleming. Recording two braces so far this season, Fleming has scored three goals with one assist in Pac-12 play and been named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week twice. In goal for UCLA is freshman Teagan Micah, who owns a 1.02 goals against average and has recorded six shutouts this year, while also being named Goalkeeper of the Week by the conference twice.
After they face Washington State on Thursday, the USC Trojans (11-3-0, 5-1-0 Pac-12) will host the Huskies on Sunday at 11 a.m. Despite having three girls with at least six goals on the team, USC's strength this season has been their defense, allowing only seven goals in 14 matches. Three of their backs have been named Defensive Player of the Week by the Pac-12, Mandy Freeman, Ally Prisock and Savannah Levin, with senior Sammy Jo Prudhomme winning keeper of the week three times. Starting every match for the Trojans this season, Prudhomme has recorded eight shutouts and grabbed 65 saves, all while retaining a 0.50 goals against average, which is good for second in the conference.
Although UW picked up their most recent victory over each team last season, both LA schools own winning records against the Dawgs, with UCLA leading the all-time series 16-4-2, and USC ahead by a record of 12-8-2.
The match at UCLA on Thursday will be televised by the Pac-12 Network, with a stream available online for Sunday's game against USC. You can also keep up with the action by following the live stats links above, or by following us on Facebook and Twitter.
