Dawgs Earn Conference Road Win At Colorado
No. 45 Washington earns a big Pac-12 road win over No. 75 Colorado, 5-2.
Shimizu Features 2011-12 (Freshman): Joined the team at the start of winter quarter for the beginning of dual play, and immediately started in doubles, then also became a valuable singles starter ... went 9-10 overall in singles matches with an 8-8 record in dual play, going 1-0 at No. 4 singles, 1-7 at No. 5 singles, and 6-1 at No. 6 singles ... got her first singles start on Feb. 5 at Minnesota, winning 6-1, 6-4 over Doron Muravnik at No. 6 singles ... won her first three dual matches against Pac-12 opponents, including a big sweep of the Bay Area teams, as she topped Natalie Dillon of Stanford, 7-6 (3), 6-1, and then overcame Stephany Chang of Cal, 6-4, 6-3 ... also had a 6-4, 6-4 win over Debora Castany of Arizona in Tucson at No. 6 singles ... suffered an ankle sprain in April that forced her to retire from matches against Utah and Washington State, but she then came back in the season finale to beat Rabea Stueckemann of Oregon, 6-0, 6-2, as UW pulled out the 4-3 win ... was 9-13 overall in doubles play, with an 8-10 record in dual play, as she went 3-3 with Natali Coronel, 2-4 with Julija Lukac, and 3-3 with Andjela Nemcevic ... had a win at No. 1 doubles with Nemcevic, as they beat Skowronski/Hager of Oregon, 9-7, in the season finale ... also teamed with Nemcevic for Pac-12 wins over Montez/Van Nguyen of UCLA, 8-5, and Tenorio/Anuszkiewicz of Colorado, 8-3 ... lost in the first round of the Pac-12 Championships, 8-1, to 54th-ranked Pulido/Scandalis while teaming with Nemcevic ... with Lukac, got a big win at home over California's Duranteau/Estlander, winning in a tiebreak, 7-1 ... with Coronel, had wins over teams from William & Mary, Minnesota, and Sacramento State.
High School and Personal: Born in Tokyo, Japan ... mother is Hiromi Shimizu and father is Tomoo Shimizu ... has an older sister, Eiko, and an older brother, Kenta ... attended the Weil Tennis Academy in Ojai, California and was coached by Takeshi Ozaki ... rated a five-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net, and ranked a high of 25th nationally in the class of 2011 ... finished sixth nationally in the USTA junior rankings for 14's, and was top-20 in the U.S. in both 16's and 18's ... had a career high ITF junior world ranking of 257 in 2010 ... significant doubles victory at the 2010 Eddie Herr International Championships for age 16's ... won three gold balls in doubles at U.S. National tournaments from 2008 to 2009 ... won the 2008 Southern California Sectionals for 14's and was ranked No. 1 in the section for 14's, top five for 16's, and top-10 for 18's.
