Washington Announces Major Fundraising Campaign for Intercollegiate Athletics

Sept. 18, 1997

SEATTLE- The University of Washington athletic department announced today a $36 million fundraising campaign to fund new athletic facilities, renovate Hec Edmundson Pavilion and provide endowment for athletic scholarships. The announcement was made jointly by University President Richard McCormick, athletic director Barbara Hedges and National Campaign Chair, Tom Porter.

The Campaign for the Student Athlete is the cornerstone of a $70 million master funding plan that is the result of strategic planning involving University administrators, coaches, student-athletes, community leaders and Husky fans. The Campaign for the Student Athlete is a five-year effort that began on July 1, 1995 and will run through June 30, 2000.

Priorities for The Campaign include:

  • Renovation of Hec Edmundson Pavilion
  • A new indoor practice facility
  • A new soccer stadium
  • A new baseball stadium
  • Renovation of the Conibear Crewhouse
  • Endowment

As of today, just over half of the $36 million needed for The Campaign has been received in contributions and pledges. The current total raised is $19,016,864.

Private contributions will provide the most significant funding portion of the strategic plan. Support will come from Washington alumni, Husky fans and supporters, and former student-athletes. In addition to the $36 million from the Campaign. The University will provide $10 million for the Hec Edmundson renovation with the remaining $24 million coming from athletic department funds including a season ticket capital improvement fee, corporate sponsorships, and the department's reserve fund.

    Renovation of Hec Edmundson Pavilion
The renovation of Hec Edmundson Pavilion is estimated to cost $38 million, of which $11 million will be needed from the Campaign. The University will provide $10 million to account for seismic and environmental concerns of the current building, as well as address the multi-purpose use of the facility. The remaining $17 million will come from the athletic department funds previously identified. The renovation is currently in the design phase. Plans are to begin construction in March of 1999 with completion in the fall of 2000.

    Indoor Practice Facility
The estimated cost of the indoor practice facility is $16 million. Funding for this project will include $6 million from Don James Center memberships, an additional $7 million from the Campaign, and $3 million from athletic department funds. Four possible sites have been recommended for the indoor practice facility. Design of the building is currently in the early stages and construction will begin upon final selection of the site and successful completion of the fundraising efforts.

Baseball Stadium, Soccer Stadium and Crewhouse Renovation
Cost estimates and programming for the baseball and soccer stadiums, as well as the Crewhouse renovation, are still being finalized. The construction schedules of these facilities will be dependent upon successful fundraising efforts. The Husky Soccer field was completed this past summer and is currently in its first season of use by both the men's and women's programs. The Husky baseball field is currently under construction and will be available for the 1998 season. Both fields will utilize temporary bleachers until their respective stadiums are completed.
