Husky Green Team
UPCOMING SUSTAINABLITY GAMES
Husky athletics is continuing its sustainability efforts during the winter season. Working in collaboration with companies such as Cedar Grove composting, the Green Team is focusing on bringing our message of sustainability to the fans.
This season we are proud to announce that we will be hosting three sustainability events for men's basketball, women's basketball, and gymnastics. At these games we will be promoting our new goals, which strive to reduce our overall waste impact at sporting events. Audiences can visit with our sponsors, learn from our staff, and enjoy some added eco-friendly fun! Also, be sure to check out our new signs for composting and recycle bins in the Alaska Airlines Arena. Expect great things to come at all of our upcoming events.
Dates: Friday, February 1, 2013: Gymnastics vs. Arizona (UW Men vs. Air Force) Saturday, February 2, 2013: Men's Basketball vs. Arizona State Friday, February 8, 2013: Women's Basketball vs. UCLA
The first "Green Minute" took place September 3rd, during the first 2010 home football game in Husky Stadium. The Green Minute is an in-game promotion that takes place in the second half of each football game. A public service announcement (PSA) is read and video is played on the video screen, encouraging fans to pass their recyclable bottles to ushers walking the aisles. The Green Minute raises awareness and promotes recycling and composting on game day.
GAME DAY CHALLENGE
In October 2011, UW participated in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Game Day Challenge.
The Game Day Challenge is a friendly competition for colleges and universities to promote waste reduction at their football games. This Challenge is an initiative of EPA's WasteWise program. During the challenge, colleges and universities implement waste reduction programs during home football games. Schools track and report waste reductions data that is used to rank the schools.
