The University of Washington Department of Athletics is committed to reducing our environmental impact. We have set goals to significantly increase our waste diverted from Husky Stadium on football game days and we are implementing more sustainability initiatives.

"Waste diversion at our sporting events is very important to us," Scott Woodward, UW athletic director, said. "We believe these new initiatives will help further reduce the carbon footprint at our sporting events, and we hope that Husky fans will join us in supporting these efforts."

Initiatives introduced in the past few seasons have been remarkably effective at increasing waste diversion. In addition to an enhanced gameday waste sorting team, more efficient implementation of recycling containers and the Green Minute have proven to be a valuable part of the UW athletic department's strategy.

"The Green Minute is a mechanism aimed at increasing our recycling totals and generating awareness of recycling practices in Husky Stadium," Karen Baebler, Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Operations, said. "Fans will have the opportunity to take an active role in supporting the recycling and waste diversion efforts of the athletic department."

The UW athletic department has also joined the Green Sports Alliance, an organization that helps sports teams, leagues and venues enhance their environmental performance. The Green Sports Alliance was founded by organizations within the Pacific Northwest: the NHL's Vancouver Canucks, the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers, and four professional Seattle franchises: the Mariners, Seahawks, Sounders, and Storm. The University of Washington is one of only two NCAA organizations involved with the Green Sports Alliance.

This year, the UW athletic department has set a waste diversion goal of 60%. The diversion rate jumped from 30% in 2009 to 51% in 2010. With a strong commitment from Husky fans, the department's diversion rate will continue to climb and the university's environmental impact will be minimized.
