SEATTLE – Over a half-dozen media members filled the media workroom at the Hec Ed Pavilion Tuesday afternoon for Fall Sports Media Day. Representatives from women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s soccer yielded questions from local media outlets about their upcoming seasons.

Volleyball went first as head coach Jim McLaughlin talked about his team’s expectations for the 2010 season. Senior setter Jenna Hagglund and senior outside hitter Kindra Carlson then commented on how they want to get to the Final Four and win a national championship. The women’s volleyball program is ranked No. 8 in the national preseason poll and was picked second in the Pac-10 preseason coaches poll. They will seek their ninth-straight NCAA appearance.

Head cross country coach Greg Metcalf showed his excitement for hosting this year’s Pac-10 Championships. He also commented on his No. 1 recruiting class on the women’s side. Junior’s Max O’Donoghue-McDonald Christine Babcock were the student-athlete representatives. The Husky women are the two-time defending Pac-10 Champions and have finished first and third at the last two NCAA Championships. The men have finished 18th at the last two NCAA meets, their first back-to-back Top-20 finishes in 20 years.

The women’s soccer team was next up with head coach Lesle Gallimore, junior Kate Deines and senior McKenna Waitley. Gallimore talked about how she feels they can win the Pac-10 Championship this year, despite being picked seventh in the conference pre-season poll. The women’s team has posted back-to-back trips to the NCAA Second Round the past two seasons. In the preseason polls, they are ranked No. 26 by topdrawersoccer.com and receiving votes in the NSCAA poll. They are 1-0 after defeating Seattle U last Friday. They head to Massachusetts this week to take on UMass (Friday) and Boston U (Sunday).

Head Coach Dean Wurzberger, senior defender Taylor Mueller, and junior forward Brent Richards represented the men’s team. Wurzberger has high hopes to return to the NCAA tournament in 2010. Wurzberger has led the Huskies to the postseason 11 out of the last 14 seasons. Mueller talked about wanting to get back into the tournament and Richards commented on his strong summer performance and the winning attitude that this year’s team has. The men’s team hosts Seattle Pacific in a scrimmage at Husky Soccer Stadium on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
