UW Recognized As A Public Ivy

University of Washington impresses during ESPN's College Gameday visit.

March 4, 2010

ESPN College Gameday came to Seattle a few weeks ago and challenged the Dawg Pack to show them something special. Husky fans did just that and then some. ESPN sports personality, Rece Davis, was so impressed by the university as a whole that he echoed his sentiments by blogging "There's a reason Washington is in the discussion when it comes to public Ivy League schools."

But what exactly is a public Ivy?

A public Ivy is a college with "stellar academics, famous faculty, dynamic students, and top-notch facilities" according to University Language Services. Public Ivy's also offer a considerably lower price-tag than the East Coast Ivy Leagues.

That sounds a lot like the University of Washington.

•It is one of the nation's top 50 universities and the premiere academic institution of the Northwest.
•U.S. News and World Report ranks 20 of the university's graduate programs in the top 20.
•The university leads the nation in federal research funding, a position it has held since 1974. ($1.15 billion in 2009)
Kiplinger ranks the university seventh best in Best Public Colleges for Your Money.

One of the more unique and recent developments at the University of Washington is the Automobili Lamborghini Advanced Composite Structures Laboratory. This state of the art facility, sponsored by Lamborghini, combines one of a kind research with supreme cool factor. Not only is this a great recruiting tool for future students and professors, but also for more sponsored research and joint ventures with companies like Boeing.
