The newest class of Huskies signed their National Letters of Intent on Wednesday, Feb. 4 and GoHuskies.com is the place to be to find out all the scoop.
Throughout the day, GoHuskies.com reported the latest signings in this Signing Day Chat. As soon as the Washington coaching staff has received each athletes' LOI and the fax was verified by the UW Compliance office, we reported it here FIRST! Only then, are the members of the 2009 class officially HUSKIES!
Also, we had FREE video reports with Bob Rondeau and Johnny DuRocher PLUS special guests at 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m., and 11:00 a.m. Plus we'll have free live video of Head Coach Steve Sarkisian's press conference.
Stay tuned all day to the Husky Signing Day Central!
GoHuskies.com: Welcome to 2009 Signing Day ... Letters of Intent should soon be coming in via the football office fax machine and, after they're confirmed and certified, we'll be posting the names of signees here on gohuskies.com. |
GoHuskies.com: We welcome questions and comments, but keep in mind that a myriad of NCAA rules cover signing day and the UW's coverage of it, so we can't answer all questions. Most importantly, we can't comment on any prospective student-athletes who have not signed a letter with the UW. |
GoHuskies.com: We'll also pass along some of your questions to Bob Rondeau and former Husky recruiting coordinator Dick Baird, who will be hosting the signing day shows on the Dawg Channel here at gohuskies.com. The first of three shows airs at 9:00 a.m. PT. |
GoHuskies.com: First off, we can announce that JC transfer Dorson Boyce, who actually signed his letter in December during the earlier JC signing period, is in the fold. More to come on others soon. |
GoHuskies.com: Talia Crichton, a defensive end from Lakewood, Calif., has signed his letter of intent and is now officially a Husky. |
GoHuskies.com: Four more Huskies can be added to the list: Marlion Barnett, Nate Fellner, Andru Pulu and Johnny Tivao. |
GoHuskies.com: Barnett is a freshman tight end from Corona, Calif. Feller comes to the UW from Fresno. He's a safety. |
GoHuskies.com: Pulu is from Federal Way and projects as a defensive end or linebacker. Tivao is a d-lineman from Cerritos College in southern California. |
GoHuskies.com: Wide receiver James Johnson from Valley Center, Calif., near San Diego, is in and official. |
| Ed (Bellingham): I hear Nate Fellner faxed his LOI at 7:01am but don't see him listed yet. How often are you updating? |
GoHuskies.com: As the letters come in, they have to be certified by the compliance department before they can be announced. As you probably know by now, Fellner has been announced. |
GoHuskies.com: So far it's been a great day! The coaches are excited and there is a buzz in the office. Scott Woodward is in the house - as is compliance director John Morris! |
| Mic (Mill Creek): FIRST...GO DAWGS!!! |
GoHuskies.com: Sorry Mic, you weren't the first! But, we are getting to the questions as best we can... Boy, what a hectic morning! It's Signing Day, what a great day to be a Husky! |
| Scott Richland: Great news about Talia being a Husky! |
| Scott Richland: Is there a set time when the letters can be accepted or is it just based on Feb 4th? |
GoHuskies.com: While April 1st is the actual last day of the signing period, nearly every prospect signs either today or pretty soon. It's hard for both the school and the prospect to firm-up their rosters and available scholarships. The coaches also have to move on, essentially. Spring ball is right around the corner and they are starting to concentrate on the next class. |
| Ed (Bellingham): With Nate in, the Cornell family continues a legacy. |
GoHuskies.com: Yep, Bo Cornell was a fullback for the Huskies from 1968-70. Nate's grandfather is also Jim Sweeney, the former WSU and Fresno State coach. So, he's got great bloodlines, eh? |
GoHuskies.com: We now have Daniel Mafoe's LOI. He's a solid junior college OL from Carson, Calif. and El Camino College. Welcome to the UW Daniel! |
| kc Phoenix: Hey guys just wanted to say im real excited for this new era in Husky football and hope you guys at Signing Day Central do as well!
Go Dawgs! |
GoHuskies.com: Ya think we are excited here at GoHuskies.com? Heck yeah! GO DAWGS! |
| Tony (texas): What does Fellner have to do with the Cornell family? |
GoHuskies.com: Nate is Bo Cornell's nephew. |
| Dean Duval: It's about time that the focus of this program is back to passion. Passion, placement and attitude sum characteristics of a great program. That goes for the fans as well, show up and help create the environment that made UW one of the toughest places to play again. I wish the rest of the team had 1% of heart of Jake. Hard to swallow but true. Loyal Dawg, and BTW stay to the last tick of every game because this is my team. (win or lose) |
GoHuskies.com: Yeah Dean! Coach Sark and his staff has preached passion from day one! And, the strength coaches really show that during offseason workouts. No question the guys on the team are fired-up to get back on the field and help get the Huskies back to the Rose Bowl! |
| David (Philadelphia): Been waiting along time for this. Looking forward to watching the University of Washington climb back to the top of the Pac 10. Lets go Sark and Co.!! |
GoHuskies.com: Welcome to the newest Husky Will Mahan - a punter from Bakersfield, Calif. He is from the same home town as Husky OL Ben Ossai, but they went to different high schools. |
| Mark (Seattle): Having just graduated from UW (with the past 4 football seasons in mind) this is the most excited I have been in years! GO HUSKIES! |
| Scott Richland: Do the coaches expect any surprises today? (Hopefully the good kind!) |
GoHuskies.com: Of course, there are always offers out there that the coaches aren't sure how they'll turn out. They are hoping for some pleasant surprises but they have a pretty good idea of what's going to happen. In either case, they are going to be happy with the results of the day, excited to get to practice and return this program back to dominance! |
| Jason: Everything is looking really good. |
GoHuskies.com: You are spot-on Jason... You can't win them all, but with the odds that have been stacked against this coaching staff from day one, the class is going to turn out just fine! |
| Tom (Federal Way): Wide receiver James Johnson from Valley Center, Calif., near San Diego, is in and official.
THAT'S EXCITING.. Didn't think James was going to sign with us.. GO DAWGS !!! |
GoHuskies.com: How cool is it that Andru Pulu is going to help lead the Husky revival in front of his hometown friends, family and fans! Welcome to the UW Andru! |
| Scott Richland: Does Coach Sark have his offseason workout program in place now? Do guys seem more motivated? |
GoHuskies.com: Yes. With new strength coach Ivan Lewis and his staff in place, the guys are working their tails off! If you ask any of the guys, they will tell you that the intensity of workouts and the participation has been exceptional! Bigger, faster, stronger... That's what is going to get Husky football back to the top! |
| Scott Kennewick: Certain signees are athletes who could play more than one position. When do the coaches decide where to start a kid? Is that partly based on the recruiting process and talking to a kid about the position he will get a chance to play if he comes to Washington? I noticed that it's pretty common for a kid to decide on a school based on the fact that one school will start him off at his preferred position of DE vs another school that wants the kid to be a inside LB? |
GoHuskies.com: Clearly there are discussions between the recruit and the coach about what they'd prefer to play. They usually come to a common ground on that issue. Coaches generally give every player a chance to play the position they prefer but at the end of the day it is all about how they can best help the team win games! |
| Kay Anderson (Kent): To Coaching Staff (and team)
I have watched the Huskies since 1965, actually before that when we came from the U of Minnesota to the Rose Bowl expecting to win, but Udub clobbered us.
My husband was a Professor, Principal, then Director of UM High, and Ass't Track coach at Minnesota with Jim Kelly.
He then joined the U of WA staff as a professor in Education Administration. We got our tickets in 1965-66 and have been Dawg fans every since, Football, basketball, CC and track. Also Gymnastic, golf and swimming. Our daughter was a Husky gymnast and son-in-law on the track team.
I am excited and pulling for the new coaches and team to build back to the winning days.
Go Dawgs, |
| Ryan (Seattle): I see we got one surprise commit so far in James Johnson. Is there any word on other recruits like (name deleted), (name deleted) or (name deleted)? |
GoHuskies.com: Thanks for the question Ryan. NCAA rules prohibit us from discussing prospects who have not signed a Letter of Intent. Is certainly a drag, but rules are rules! |
GoHuskies.com: Welcome to Will Shamberger, a 6-0 safety from Compton, Calif.! |
GoHuskies.com: Shamberger is from the same hometown as UW men's basketball coach Lorenzo Romar - different high school though! Also from Compton... Anthony Boyles |
GoHuskies.com: A flurry of NLI's coming in... David Batts, a 6-1 safety from Lynwood, Calif. and El Camino College, is now a Husky! Welcome David! |
GoHuskies.com: Batts is from the same hometown as Darrion Jones! |
GoHuskies.com: Also, welcome Chris Robinson - a 6-0 defensive lineman from Tustin, Calif. Robinson's high school went to the CIF Southern Section division championship game last season. |
GoHuskies.com: AND... welcome to Tim Tucker, a 6-1 linebacker from Harbor City, Calif. Tim went to the same high school as Dashon Goldson and Roy Lewis - two former Huskies currently in the NFL! Great got have you as a DAWG Tim! |
| Scott Richland: Does (Will Mahan) kick as well as punt? |
GoHuskies.com: I think it's safe to say that he could join the competition to be a kicker... But, the coaches are expecting him to come in and make the biggest immediate impact as a punter. |
| Scott Richland: Can coaches make contact with recruits today? What if a recruit calls the coach? |
GoHuskies.com: Interestingly, 48 hours prior to the NLI signing period (which began at 7 a.m. local time this morning) there is unlimited telephone contact allowed. So, coaches can call recruits but they can't have face-to-face contact. Kinda makes the "dead period" not quite as dead as it sounds. After the prospect signs the NLI, there is unlimited contact allowed. If a prospect hasn't signed an NLI by Friday morning (48 hours after the signing period began), coaches are back to only being allowed one phone call per week. Clear as mud, right? |
| Scott Richland: Another stupid question but here goes..is it true that certain coaches won't recruit say, defensive lineman who don't measure up in their mind height wise? |
GoHuskies.com: Am sure that some coaches have various biases in their minds that keep them from considering certain players - it goes both ways in the example of projecting a guy will grow taller, stronger, faster, etc... But, the bottom line is whether or not that player can help the team. College football is full of guys who didn't "project" as they say because of whatever factors. It is also full of "five-star" guys who didn't make it. |
| Shap (Vancouver): Jake should be totally stoked about J.J. signing with the Huskies. It's noon somewhere! Yahoooooo! |
| James(York): After the LI is received what would happen if an incoming recruit were not able to fulfill that scholarship, would the university be able to get that scholarship back or is it just considered an unfortunate incident and scholarship is lost? |
GoHuskies.com: If a signee is unable to fulfill his commitment (for example, not qualify academically), that scholarship certainly reverts back to the number that is allowed to be given out. Remember that scholarships are real $$ the athletic department pays the university for each athlete to attend the UW. The maximum number is dictated by NCAA rules, but whether or not the scholarships are reallocated is an institutional decision. Here's a kicker in that issue... If the UW were to have a player graduate from high school early, his SPRING scholarship for the current year would count against this year's numbers... So, sometimes it might be best to not give out all 85 maximum scholarships. Something to consider. |
| George Tacoma: I love the fact that Sark isn't afraid to sign some JUCO kids to help right away. That's a welcomed change in philosophy |
GoHuskies.com: George, not sure that it is a change in philosophy. The UW has signed JC players almost every year. In fact, a few JC guys on the team right now - Jason Wells, Danny Morovick, for example. The thing to consider is making sure JC guys are able to 1) qualify for admission to the UW and 2) make an immediate contribution... |
GoHuskies.com: Hey, a quick note that the first of our signing day shows with Bob Rondeau and Dick Baird is about to start. |
GoHuskies.com: Welcome to Keith Price - a 6-1 quarterback from Compton! We now have his NLI... Welcome to the Dawgs Keith! |
GoHuskies.com: Keith Price is a prep teammate of NLI signee Will Shamburger! Yeah Dawgs... |
| Scott Richland: WOW! How thick is the NCAA rule book? |
GoHuskies.com: 427 pages! |
| Scott Kennewick: How much of recruiting is getting a class that is ranked high versus getting guys that the coaches think are the best football players? I know that may sound stupid but so much of recruiting seems to be ranking related. |
GoHuskies.com: Any coach that recruits guys based on "star ratings" is most likely not going to succeed very long... Coach recuit based on need and their evaluations - not the website rankings. |
GoHuskies.com: Welcome to the newest official Husky.......... Desmond Trufant, a 6-0 cornerback from Tacoma! |
GoHuskies.com: Trufant is the brother of Seahawk cornerback Marcus Trufant and is a first-team all-state selection. He is also an outstanding track athlete and basketball player. |
| James(York): With a good mix of JC transfers and incoming Freshman who is expected to make an immediate impact on their side of the ball? |
GoHuskies.com: Good question... And, a good time to remind everyone that Coach Sark's press conference will be live on GoHuskies.com starting at 1:00 (Pacific) today! Odds are that someone will ask him that question! |
| Scott: How many scholarships do we have available his year and are we likely to take any early entry guys next year? |
GoHuskies.com: That is a tough question to answer. Never know about attrition, incoming signees qualifying or not qualifying, etc.. Suffice it to say that we'll know more when spring ball starts and even more when the guys report for fall camp. We do believe there will be plenty of opportunity to bring in early high school graduates in time for next spring practice in '10. |
| Robert (Lynnwood): I'm glad Trufant chose UW... unlike his brother! |
GoHuskies.com: We are too Robert! Go Dawgs! |
| Scott Richland: I oould do this all day but I'm heading over for the SOLD OUT recruiting banquet tonight! I have to head over the pass. Thanks all and of course GO DAWGS!! |
GoHuskies.com: There has been such an awesome demand for tickets to the Signing Day Celebration tonight in the Don James Center! Should have about 700 people there! Will be a great night to meet the new coaches and feel the excitement of the Sark era of Husky Football! |
| Brett (Seattle-Bryant): I can't wait to see film on all these new Huskies tonight at the Signing Day party. Go Dawgs from the Party at the Pig tailgate crew! |
GoHuskies.com: Don't forget you can see some of thae video (not all of it, there will be more at the Signing Day Celebration) on the Signing Day shows on GoHuskies.com! The first of three shows just finished and will be archived within moments... The next live show with Bob Rondeau and Dick Baird begins at 10 a.m. |
| James(York-PA): With the new coaching staff and new ideas how much more pressure does this add to Jake to take that next step and perform at a much higher lever? |
GoHuskies.com: Just as nearly every athlete will tell you, no one puts more pressure on a Jake than Jake. Obviously there are some changes from last year, but he's been working hard to learn the new system and technique and will be ready for spring ball. Will say this, Jake has a chance to be one of the best quarterbacks in the country and he is committed to leading this program back to the top of the Pac-10. |
| kc phoenix: Could JC players enroll early in time for spring ball? |
GoHuskies.com: To specifically answer your question, yes they could.. However, it appears that Boyce is the only one who is likely to be here in the spring. Most JC guys (not just at UW, any JC signees) have academic work to do to complete their AA degrees in time to get to school in the fall. It isn't that common for JC guys to complete their degrees in one-and-a-half years. |
| James (York): What games, on the 2009, schedule are deemed key games? All the games are important but which are just elevated that much more based on who we are playing? |
GoHuskies.com: Have you ever heard a coach say anything other that "the most important game is the next game!" So, with that in mind, the LSU game on Sept. 5 at Husky Stadium is the most important game on the Huskies' schedule. |
GoHuskies.com: Now, a good time to plug season tickets! New season ticket deposits are new being accepted by the Husky Tickets Office by calling (206) 543-2200! For current season ticket holders, you should have received your renewal notice. GO DAWGS! |
| Mark (Seattle): How much did the coaching staff emphasize the possiblity of upgrading Husky Stadium within the recruiting process? |
GoHuskies.com: The coaches certainly talked about it, but reality is much more important than anything else. We need the Husky Nation to get on board, support the initiative and once it is passed, we can show the world of the commitment to the success of the UW athletics program. |
GoHuskies.com: For those of you on Facebook, there are a couple of good things you can do... Join the "Fix Husky Stadium" group and show your support. And, you can become a fan of "Washington Husky Football" Also, check out two key Twitter feeds at www.twitter.com/coachsark and www.twittter.com/UWSportsNews |
| Scott Kennewick: There are a lot of defensive recruits in this class. Was that based on need or was that because more of those guys were available due to the late start? |
GoHuskies.com: Coach Sark will address this today at his press conference - but am sure he will mention that it is a combination of things. Obviously we needed to strengthen the defense and there are some guys in this class who will be able to do that. Don't lose sight of the fact that last year's class was highly-rated and a year of experience and an offseason with the new staff should show this fall. |
| David (Ellensburg): Why do some schools have more than 25 commits? I noticed that Hawaii had 32 on Scout.com. |
GoHuskies.com: Schools can actually sign as many prospects as they like, as long as they only bring in 25 scholarship players in the fall. There are a lot of options: Greyshirting (they don't attend on scholarship, aren't enrolled full-time and don't participate in athletic activities), coming in early (i.e. graduating from high school mid-term and enrolling for the spring) are a couple that come to mind. A couple of years ago, the UW signed 27 guys but not all of them qualified. |
GoHuskies.com: March 31 is the first day of spring ball and the Spring Game will be played on April 25. |
| Mark W.Seattle: Nice feature here. In the future, a time stamp on the messages would be nice to make it easier to track :) |
GoHuskies.com: You are right Mark. We'll ask CBS Sports Online if we can do that... Would be better if the most recent posts were at the top too... |
| James York: With so many of the recruits from CA, is that based more on talent level or Coach? |
GoHuskies.com: if you read any of the recruiting analysts, they all seem to say it wasn't the strongest year for the state of Washington. But, you have to take into consideration that the coaching staff was probably a lot more familiar with prospects in California and, thus, able to get in their homes and being the recruiting process quicker... That said, Coach Sark has said several times that putting a fence up around the state of Washington is a priority and so is establishing strong relationships with the area's high school coaches. The classes in the future will most likely be made up of more local/regional kids with, hopefully, a sprinkling of the top players in California and other regional states. As a point of reference, a quick look at last year's UW roster shows 31 players from California. |
| old dawg: can not signed prospects go to the husky function tonight? |
GoHuskies.com: NCAA rules prohibit prospects from attending schools' Signing Day functions on or off campus. Many schools actually conduct Signing Day functions in other cities - particularly in larger metro areas. For example, Texas schools generally try to get in front of their alums in Dallas and Houston since their populations are so large... Doesn't answer your question but it is interesting... Go DAWGS! |
| Nathan (Bothell): I just have to say I don't care what the other sites are saying, I am extremely excited for Husky Football |
GoHuskies.com: Hear ya Nathan! We are excited too!!!!! |
| nelson (slc,ut): any word on DT (Name Deleted)? |
GoHuskies.com: Sorry Nelson, we are prohibited by NCAA rule from discussing prospects who have not signed. |
| mistericeman: still awaiting word for the Hawaii future Dawgs....c'mon wake up Islanders. |
GoHuskies.com: This is a good time to explain that NCAA rules prohibit prospects from signing their Letters of Intent prior to 7 a.m. local time. So, Hawai'i, for example, is a couple of hours behind the Pacific time zone. So, we wouldn't receive any NLI's from Hawai'i until much later than West Coast guys. Same is true for East Coast schools. They started receiving NLI's at 4 a.m. Pacific time. |
| Ryan (Renton): any word on whether were expecting some more signees? there was a couple recruits that we were battling (edited out) for but i noticed they havent signed with them either? |
GoHuskies.com: We expect a couple more signees. This is the time of day the coaches are the most nervous... There are still a few offers pending. Lot of hand-wringing going on! |
| Geoff (Wenatchee): When is the first day of spring ball? |
GoHuskies.com: Sorry Geoff, thought I posted your question earlier. March 31 is the first day of spring ball and the Spring Game will be played on April 25. |
GoHuskies.com: Welcome to Semisi Tokolahi, a 6-2, 319-pound defensive lineman from Hilo, Hawai'i! Welcome Semisi, our newest DAWG! |
GoHuskies.com: Tokolahi was the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I Defensive Player of the Year! Also played some fullback. How about seeing 319 pounds coming at you - crashing through the line? |
| Jessica (NJ): Any chance some of the high school guys come in early? |
GoHuskies.com: At this point, it does not appear that any of the signees are scheduled to graduate early and attend the UW early. |
| mike (whatcom county): like the energy of this site.
would prefer keeping the posts the order so one can follow the thread as it progresses. |
GoHuskies.com: Thanks for the suggestion Mike. Definitely a limitation of the technology. Thanks, though, to CBS Sports Online - our Internet partner. They have been great to the UW and we are looking forward to a complete GoHuskies.com overhaul this spring/summer. |
| Justin (Boise): I don't care what the experts say about this class! These players are going to be a good foundation for the new coaching staff to build on. I get the sense these players are hungry to play hard-nosed football at UW! Exactly what we need more of! |
GoHuskies.com: Right on! |
| James York: With some of the injuries we had at the end of the season and most notably to Jake, are all those players at 100% or at least expected to be at 100% come 3/31? Would just be great to be able to have everyone there and none missing because of injury. |
GoHuskies.com: At this point, just about everyone is expected to go through spring ball. Terrance Daily had shoulder surgery and will miss. Am sure more info will come out as we appoach the end of March! |
| Devin ( Seattle ): How will taking less then 20 scholarship athletes (projected) for this class effect future classes... Will we have more scholarships available next year??? |
GoHuskies.com: As mentioned earlier, there are options: 1) To award scholarships to deserving current walk-ons; 2) To award scholarships to guys coming in early next spring (those count toward this year's total). |
| Me (Seattle): The nice thing about the class, is there will be competition in Fall. Last year everyone knew what the starting line up would be and that is never good. Competition makes for a better team, and these JC players are going to push for starting jobs right away! |
| Harv Satellite Beach, Fl: GO DAWGS |
| Grant (Seattle): Seeing that there are only around 10-15 HS athletes signing with UW today, are we looking at possibly taking a lot of JC kids in 2-3 years to make sure we have depth? |
GoHuskies.com: There is no question that coaches would prefer to sign almost exclusively high school prospects. JC guys make it hard to have longer-term continuity. The situation this year dictated that Sark sign some older guys who could come in and play right away. Future signing classes should feature enough quality and depth that guys will be able to play right away regardless of age. |
| Jason Walla Walla: How does our class compare to our cross state rival? |
GoHuskies.com: Read and believe what you want, but we'll take our guys versus theirs anyday! We hvae guys who want to be Huskies and that means more than anything! |
| Richard (Phoenix): Do any of the recruits, especially offense, stand out as guys that are likely to heavily contribute this year? |
GoHuskies.com: Probably a little to early to project that and I'm not sure Sark will be able to answer that during his 1 p.m. press conference (live on GoHuskies.com). But, logic states that if a guy competes for a job and is better than the guy in front of him, he'll play regardless of age. Very few signees come to college with the expectation and hope they will redshirt. Usually their quality, experience and potential dictates that. |
| John (spokane): First off...It is great to be a HUSKY in cougar country!
How many recruits do the coaches expect to sign today? |
GoHuskies.com: There are still a few offers out there, but the day is getting on... So, would only expect a couple more announcements! |
| James York: With a fairly young team still and the experience that will come with that should we expect that there will be more redhsirt freshman this year based on the overall age of the players who still have so much eligibility left? |
GoHuskies.com: Not sure about "more" redshirt freshmen since the class is a little smaller - perhaps a more accurate way to state it would be a larger percentage of incoming freshmen redshirting... Usually not that many true freshmen have actually played in recent years - with the exception of last season. If memory serves, Donald Butler and Paul Homer were the only players in their class that played. So it is not uncommon to redshirt nearly the entire class. |
| James York: With the hiring of Coach Sark is there more pressure for him to show more success now because of the program that he came from and the success they had? |
GoHuskies.com: Don't think there is any more pressure on him than any other coach would have had. He's driven to be successful. He's popular with fans, recruits, players, families, staff... Seems the program is in good hands. |
GoHuskies.com: Welcome to the newest Husky...... Dominique Gaisie is a 5-9 cornerback from West Covina, Calif. |
GoHuskies.com: Gaisie played for current UW cornerbacks coach Demetrice Martin at Mt. SAC. |
| James Johnson: Any word on the WR coach? |
GoHuskies.com: Nothing today... Signing Day has been Sark's focus. |
| Mark (Seattle): Have any current players asked to transfer with the change in coaching staffs? |

GoHuskies.com: Not that we are aware of. |

| James York: Just wanted to say in closing, since the day is ending here on the east coast, that it is a great day to be a Dawg and thank goodness the season is here again. GO DAWGS!!!!! Lets get ready to play some DAWGBALL! |
| Mic (Mill Creek): This may be a dumb question, but I will ask anyway. Is there any additional contact with incoming or current players other than strenght/conditioning and possibly working on the playbook allowed prior to spring ball? |
GoHuskies.com: Colleges are not allowed to supervise workouts with incoming players. They can come in during the summer and work out with the current players - as long as coaches are not involved and it is voluntary. The current players are working with the strength coaches and are conducting voluntary workouts on their own - i.e. with no coaches around. There are times when coaches can be present before spring ball starts but we currently don't have that information nearby. The UW compliance office works closely with the football staff to ensure they can spend the maximum amount of time with the athletes as allowed by NCAA rules. |

| Steve (Denver): I was noticing that RIVALS.com is showing some guys as having their LOI received when you guys are not. My money is on you as being the most accurate. Do you know where they get their info? |
GoHuskies.com: We suppose they get information directly from prospects, but we can't be sure. We can tell you, however, that every NLI that has been received has been announced. That doesn't mean that a prospect didn't send a fax to a different number or a machine is jammed, etc... But, the bottom line is that we are the only official source for accurate information as far as who has signed letters of intent. |
| Jeff (Kirkland): Great job today staff! Back to work. Go Dawgs! |
GoHuskies.com: Thanks Jeff! What a great day. |
| James York: what kind of expectations are put on the incoming freshman in reagards to bulking up and/or getting faster and outside of going to the gym how do they keep them on track for the whole year and even during the breaks? |
GoHuskies.com: The strength and conditioning staff provides written workouts the prospects should be following before they get on campus. The only expectation is that they come in this August in the best possible condition and be ready to work. Really, the biggest reason for providing the workouts is not only to ensure they are as prepared as possible - they are provided to help the athletes understand the expectations and to help prevent injuries once they arrive. |
GoHuskies.com: It should also be noted that most - if not all - incoming athletes come in during the summer and participate in the summer bridge academic program. Or, they get a head start on academic requirements before fall camp starts. This provides an opportunity to bond with the current players and start working out with them. |
