Sounders U23 Top Timbers U-23s in Thrilling 4-3 Victory
VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Sounders U23 defeated the Timbers U-23s 4-3 in a thrilling match at the Kiggins Bowl on a rainy Friday night in Vancouver, Washington.
There was no steady lead for either team, as the match was tied 1-1, then 2-2, and 3-3, the goals being from 5 minutes to, at most, 25 minutes apart. It wasn't until the 88th minute that the Sounders U-23 got the game winning goal from Fernando Monge. The Sounders handed Portland its first home loss of the season. The Sounders win gets them right back in the hunt for the Northwest Division crown, as they leap over the Timbers in the standings to 3rd place with 21 points, only two points behind the Division-leading Kitsap Pumas. The Timbers fall to 4th place with 19 points. Huskies Chris Brundage and Michael Uyehara made the starting 18 for the Sounders U23. Goalkeeper Spencer Richey played in all 90 minutes for the Timbers U-23s, recording four saves. Portland face a second game in four days as they visit the North Sound SeaWolves Monday night at Edmonds Woodway High School; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. The Sounders continue on the road and will also play the SeaWolves on June 29.
