Anchorage Day II: Huskies & Huskies

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- The first thing that threw everyone off was the late sunrise. Our first instinct is to look out the window and if it's still dark, then you know you have a few more Zs to catch.

Not the case in Alaska, where the sun didn't come up until 10 a.m.

Other than that, everything is good in the Great White North. The Huskies had a productive day of study hall, an open practice at Sullivan Arena, a closed practice at Chugiak High School and film. There was also the banquet, where an improv group "Scared Scriptless" pulled Kristi Kingma and Coach Jackson onto the stage to take part in the show.

KKimprov.JPGDuring the skit, Kristi and Coach J had a horn and a bell as props. Two actors were impersonating the coach & student-athlete. If what they said fit in with how the person was, you rang the bell. If it was wrong, you squeezed the horn and the actor would shift gears.  It was quite humorous.

The banquet was a great opportunity for the student-athletes to mingle with players from every team. The coaches all got up and spoke to the crowd, sharing plenty of warm appreciation for the Great Alaska Shootout.

But the best part of the day was post-practice at Chugiak HS, when the Huskies had the chance to pet and play with a group of real huskies - actual Iditarod race dogs. This was an extra hour outside in sub 20-degree weather, but no one seemed to mind. Especially since Karen Gunderman in the equipment room hooked everyone up with warm parkas for the trip.

DawgsHuskies2.JPGAfter the banquet was over, the Huskies had some scout film to watch. The team did take a few moments to catch the men's team and their impressive victory (jaw-dropping, actually) over Virginia.

All for now. We'll continue to provide tidbits and other material from the Great Alaska Shootout. Make sure you catch Kristi Kingma's blog for GoHuskies.com.

Road Trip Continues: On To Anchorage

Over the course of the Great Alaska Shootout, check with the Dawg Blawg to get everything from behind-the-scenes with the Washington women's basketball team...

ANCHORAGE, Alaska -- It starts to hit you on the drive out of Ted Stevens International Airport. There's the snow-frosted pines, the majestic mountains in the distance and the cold wind howling through the air.

Yep, the Huskies have made it to Alaska.

AnchorageLandscape.JPGThe team is in the Great White North for the next four days to take part in the 33rd Annual Great Alaska Shootout, which begins Tuesday at 9 p.m. (PST) against Kent State. Washington landed in Anchorage this afternoon after an almost four-hour flight from Seattle. The stay at home was short following the BYU trip, so the team had the entire day off Sunday.

Once in Alaska, the players & coaches went to dinner at the Sourdough Mining Company, where everyone feasted on steaks and fresh Alaskan seafood. It's a ubiquitous Anchorage dining experience, and our waiter said that Duke & North Carolina had shared our same dining experience in year's past.

GoDawgsAK.JPG Did we say the team had the day off? Well, scratch that. There was film to watch from the BYU game, a nod to the Husky football program's "Tell the Truth Mondays." It's clear that the coaching staff was not pleased with what transpired at BYU, so a film session was in order to correct some flaws.

The team has a day of practice booked at a nearby high school tomorrow, so there's an opportunity to improve on the court as well. There's also a great city/region to explore. There's nothing quite like Alaska, and the Huskies are thrilled to be here.

Huskies Land In Provo

A group of loose, relaxed Huskies have landed in Utah in prep for the team's game at BYU on Saturday afternoon (12 p.m. PST).

Right now, the Washington women's basketball team is at the Marriott Center on the campus of BYU, about halfway through their two-hour practice. The goal is to put the team in the right frame of mind heading into the first road game of the season, a place where the Huskies won't have the friendly crowd at Hec Ed to lean on.

One thing visiting fans will notice at the Marriott Center is its enormous size. The building sits 23,700 and when full can be one of the most intimidating atmospheres for all of college basketball. Secondly, it was pretty cool to look in the rafters and see Danny Ainge's jersey hanging up there.

MarriottCenter.JPGPart of what makes trips like these fun for the team is the bonding that goes on. That's why Jackson schedules jaunts around the country early in the season, so the team can coalesce together away from the pressure of school, social life, etc., back home in Seattle.

The trip to Utah begin before sunup with a 6 a.m. flight to Salt Lake City. Many of the student-athletes were at the Washington football game against UCLA the night before, so there was a lot of sleeping Dawgs on the short trip to the Beehive State. After a quick breakfast of pancakes at IHOP, the team bussed downstate to Provo, where they decamped at a downtown hotel.

ProvoMarriott.JPGAfter lunch and film work, the team bussed on-campus to the Marriott Center for practice. Upon return to the hotel, the rest of the night until curfew is there's.

A full gallery of pictures from the first day of the road trip is available on the team's Facebook page. You can also swing by GoHuskies.com to check out the game notes and find links to GameTracker and Live Audio.

Crew Lends Hand With Planting Trees At Seattle Parks

Over the weekend, the Washington crew program helped plant trees at Magnuson Park in the Sand Point neighborhood of Seattle. The charitable project was in support of Green Seattle Day and was organized by Robert Squires of the men's crew team.

It was, as Squires pointed out, "our turn to give back to the Lake Washington ecosystem which has given us this beautiful place to live and train."

According to Green Seattle Day information, without a coordinated effort, Seattle is at risk of losing 70 percent of its forests in just 20 years. The Green Seattle Partnership is aiming to reverse the trend by mobilizing thousands of volunteers to restore 2,500 acres by 2025.

Hammer and Pole Vault Talk

Venerable track and field publication Track & Field News is currently running a multi-part interview with legendary American pole vaulter Jeff Hartwig. In it, Hartwig discusses several of the current top American vaulters, including current Husky senior Scott Roth, and former Dawg and World Champion Brad Walker.

Here is the section of the interview concerning Roth in which Hartwig says, "of the young up-and-coming guys, he's doing the most right of anybody." Hartwig then goes on to analyze the speed that Roth uses to make up for his relatively small stature.

Talking about Walker, Hartwig says "If he gets his health back, he definitely is the guy to beat--not only in the U.S., but probably the world," though he admits that commenting on Walker is tough considering his recent struggles with injury.

Another fascinating read for Husky track fans is this blog entry from former UW All-American Martin Bingisser, who continues to train towards the 2012 Olympics in the hammer throw while vocally advocating for the sport on his website. In the post, Bingisser lays out the reasons for adding the hammer to the 13-14 year old age group in USATF youth competition. Bingisser lays out several compelling arguments and asks for support in calling for the rule change.

Definitely inspiring to see someone still so passionate about their sport and working hard to improve its standing!  Bingisser's blog is a great place to visit regularly for insight on the sport.

Perez A Hero For Mexican National Team

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Game Highlights: http://www.concacaf.com/page/WGC/VideosDetail/0,,12813~2209890,00.html

As a 2009 Husky graduate, Veronica Perez did the UW Women's Soccer Team proud last year when she was drafted in the fourth round as the seventh PAC-10 player selected for the Women's Professional League (WPL). Not only did Perez begin her professional career on the St. Louis Athletica team, but she joined the U.S. U-23 team as well. It wasn't until 2010 that she made the switch to begin her career on the Mexican Women's National team. In addition to her being a professional soccer player, Perez has also volunteered her time as an assistant soccer coach for the Huskies this year.

It is no surprise that the lines of loyalty blurred this past Friday in Seattle as Huskies everywhere took news of alum Perez scoring the game-winning goal for the Mexican Women's National team to upset the U.S. in a 2-1 victory in the 2010 CONCACAF Women's World Cup. November 5th, 2010 now marks an enormous occasion in the world of the Women's Professional Soccer (WPS), as it is the first Mexican National victory over the U.S. in 26 matches. It also stands out as the first time the U.S. has failed to advance to the championships of a CONCACAF event.

While this was an enormous defeat for the U.S. team, coach Lesle Gallimore was not torn at all about her pride in Perez's contribution. Gallimore admits that although she is "clearly a huge fan of the U.S. and want[s] them to do well and to qualify, Veronica has worked really hard to make a name for herself in this game and for her National Team," and maintains that, "It was easy to be super excited for Veronica."

"Playing the US in Mexico was great," says Perez regarding the game, "we made history, and it was awesome to do it in front of our fans." Veronica gives credit to her right wing teammate who crossed the perfect ball that knocked perfectly off her head and into in the lower left corner of the goal past U.S. goal keeper Nicole Barnhart in the 27th minute. This brought Mexico to a 2-1 lead that they were able to hold for the remainder of the game.

Veronica insists that her team went into the game knowing that they had everything to win and nothing to lose, and recognizes the importance of the game stating, "If we won, we got an automatic bid, and if we lost we were going to have to play Costa Rica. We weren't going to lose."

This 'refuse-to-be-defeated' mindset proved to be exactly what these underdogs needed to pull through last Friday; the Mexican National team has now earned themselves a spot in the World Cup, which will take place June 2011. "We are excited to watch [Perez] in Germany next summer," says Coach Gallimore.

With the World Cup six months away Veronica and her teammates state that they plan to stay busy until then, "We have three tournaments leading up to it, and then after that we'll be in training camp." This epic win has energized the team and they are confident in maintaining the focus and confidence they now have in order to succeed in Germany next year.

Veronica herself says that she has had a great experience on the Mexican National team and has enjoyed her time there even if it has meant meeting the demanding travel excursions from Seattle to Mexico and back in juggling her volunteer coaching and career as professional athlete.

Men's Crew Takes On Mt. Si

Under the cover of darkness, the men's crew team at Washington made a Veteran's Day trip to Mt. Si for a training exercise. This fitness test involved a time run up the 4-mile trail, which is a popular hiking destination for Seattle-area residents. It's also steep, full of switchbacks and a mental test for those who choose just to walk up the route.

Imagine what a sprint feels like?

And of course, the competition was intense.

But the taxing activity was also a way for the men's crew team to honor the veterans who have served in wars all over the world, and some of whom paid the ultimate sacrifice. The men's crew program has a storied history of sending rowers into the armed forces, and currently there are two student-athletes (Reiner Hershaw and Robert Squires) who spent the summer training with the Marines and Navy respectively.

Portland is averaging 3,633 fans a game and should break its overall attendance record of 47,082 set in 2008 this weekend, assuming it wins its first-round match against UTSA.

The NCAA women's record of 3,983 fans a game set by North Carolina in 2001 is beyond reach.

Portland is the only team averaging more than 3,000 fans a game. Texas A&M averaged 3,211 in 2009.

Four teams average 2,000 or more fans a game in 2010, up from three in 2009, and 20 teams average 1,000-plus fans in 2010, the same as in 2009.

Of the 20 teams, 15 have increased their average attendance over last year's final figure.

The most notable drop has taken place at Stanford, where the Cardinal's average attendance is down 37 percent over last season's final average despite its second straight unbeaten regular season.

New to the Top 20 in 2010 are USC, Army, Texas Tech, Texas, Duke and Michigan.

Dropping below 1,000 fans a game and out of the Top 20 are Fresno State, Colorado, Florida State, Connecticut, UCLA and Tennessee.

Women's Soccer NCAA Selection Show At 1:30 p.m.

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

The 2010 NCAA women's soccer selection show will air on ESPNU today at 1:30 p.m. PST. The Huskies are looking for one of 34 at large bids for the third-straight season after finishing with an 11-8-1 overall record and a 4-5-0 record in the Pac-10.

The Huskies will watch the show as a team on campus privately. Stay tuned to www.gohuskies.com after the show to find out more details as far as game and ticket information.

Socceramerica.com posted its predictions this morning as to who it thinks will make the tournament. Please note that this is not official. The projected bracket does include the Huskies as one of seven teams to make the NCAA Tournament. Stanford will get the automatic berth from the Pac-10 by winning the regular season title.  http://www.socceramerica.com/article/40320/projected-ncaa-division-i-tournament-field.html.

Dawgs Touch Down In Eugene

It only took 45 minutes for the Huskies to transport themselves to Eugene, Ore, via charter plane. Coincidentally, the Washington football program spent nearly that amount of time during their walkthrough at Autzen Stadium before heading to the team hotel for meetings and dinner.

Autzen.JPGWashington's walkthrough was rather light. The team kept loose throughout before Coach Steve Sarkisian gathered everyone at midfield to deliver his message to the group.

The No. 1 ranked Ducks present a formidable challenge to the Huskies. But backup QB Keith Price - who will start in place of the injured Jake Locker - was in good spirits while he tossed a football with safety Nate Fellner during the walkthrough. The RS freshman is certainly not intimidated by the task at hand, starting his first-ever game at notoriously raucous Autzen Stadium.

No worries.

"It's not like he's never played in a big game - he's never played in a big game as a starter in the Pac-10," Huskies offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier told the Tacoma News-Tribune. "That high school league he played in down in California (Trinity League) is a big-time high school football league, about as good of high school football as you're going to see anywhere. Having done that, he's played in big environments."

Remember, you can follow the Huskies' trip on Twitter (@UWSportsNews), and on GoHuskies.com, which will hold an interactive chat during Saturday's game.

Roundup Of Lincecum Stories

One of the more iconic pictures of the 2010 World Series was that of San Francisco Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum being carried on the field by his teammates after his team defeated the Texas Rangers in Game 5.

It's great that the rest of the country is also able to see what a special talent Lincecum is, something those of us here at Washington have known for years. The pressure of the big stage never seemed to bother Lincecum, as noted by Giants outfielder Cody Ross to the New York Times earlier this week.

"He was dancing around, singing, doing all his stuff 40 minutes before the game, like he wasn't pitching," Ross said. "That's just how he is. He's a happy-go-lucky guy, doesn't let anything affect him. He's a bulldog, that's why he did what he did."

Since the World Series ended, there's been an impressive amount of copy written about the Giants' ace and former UW star. Here's a sampling of the best ones.

Tim Lincecum's Giant-Sized Legacy - ESPN (Jerry Crasnick)
New Ace For An Era - New York Times
A Fresh Ace - The New Yorker
Tim Lincecum Repays San Francisco Support With Title - USA Today

We also enjoyed this GIF of Lincecum's sartorial capabilities, as he arrives to the Rangers' ballpark in a bowtie.
