Senior Quincy Pondexter would someday like to pursue a career in sports broadcasting and this past Friday's Midnight Madness gave him ample opportunities to be exposed to ESPN and all the glitz and glamour that surrounds having the broadcasting giant in the house.
Early in the evening, Pondexter invited himself into the ESPN TV trucks outside of Bank of America arena, with his flip cam in tow. He joked around with the hardworking-crew inside the truck as they prepared for the night's show. The group, led by producer Jeff Dufine, seemed to enjoy the interest that Pondexter showed and took him on a tour of the cramped quarters.
Pondexter then sought out former UCLA coach and current ESPN broadcaster Steve Lavin. He had wanted to meet up with the former coach to turn the tables and interview him. It turned into a great 3 1/2 minute segment that had Pondexter and Lavin joking with each other and then coach Lorenzo Romar.
Lavin suggested that maybe if he had recruited Pondexter out of Fresno, he still might be working at Westwood. He also heaped praise on Pondexter and said that he has a lot of basketball in his future and will have to put his broadcasting future on hold until his NBA playing days are over.
