The women's basketball team remains hard at work during its fall workouts. Today, the ladies worked through position drills with their coaches. The post players worked on post moves, blocking and other fundamentals, while the guards worked on shooting and setting screens.
After their position work, the whole team went though another round of conditioning and agility exercises. The Huskies are looking even faster and fitter than they did just two weeks ago. Check out the pictures from today's practice!
The national champion Washington softball team was honored today during the first session of the 111th Congress at the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C.
At 11:05 a.m. ET, a resolution was made congratulating the team for winning the 2009 Women's College World Series. Washington representative Jim McDermott introduced the resolution, which follows: Mr. MCDERMOTT (for himself, Mr. REICHERT, Mr. INSLEE, Mr. BAIRD, Mr. DICKS, Mr. HASTINGS of Washington, Mrs. MCMORRIS RODGERS, Mr. LARSEN of Washington, and Mr. SMITH of Washington) submitted the following resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Education and Labor Whereas, on June 2, 2009, for the first time in school history, the Women Huskies won the NCAA National Softball Championship game with a 3-2 victory over the University of Florida; Whereas University of Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie was named the Women's College World Series MVP and the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year; Whereas the Huskies finished the 2009 season with an impressive record of 51-12; Whereas the members of the 2009 University of Washington softball team are excellent representatives of a university that is one of the premier academic institutions in Washington State, producing many outstanding student-athletes and other leaders; and Whereas the members of the women's softball have brought great honor to themselves, their families, the University of Washington, and the State of Washington: Now, therefore, be it
Marquee Match-up: Washington at Notre Dame Washington is on the road again this week with Jake Locker leading the Huskies (2-2) to South Bend as they square off against the Fighting Irish (3-1) and Jimmy Clausen. Last weekend, the Fighting Irish rallied in the final minute to beat Purdue (24-21) when Clausen threw the game-winning 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Rudolph with 24 seconds left. Clausen, a junior, has thrown for 1,122 yards and 10 touchdowns this season and has a quarterback rating of 172.9, which ranks him fourth in the nation. During a weekly press conference, Notre Dame head coach Charlie Weis commented on Locker, "He's a frontline quarterback. He can make the tough throws. All you have to do is see the last drive of the USC game and you know that kid is a play maker." Locker, previously named O'Brien QB of the Week, leads the Pac-10 in passing with 1,002 yards this season. Despite the Huskies' upset over the University of Southern California, signal-caller Locker looks to help the Huskies rebound from a 34-14 loss to Stanford last weekend. Fans can now register and vote for any of the 120 FBS quarterbacks online at www.VoteOBrien.org. The Fan Vote counts as 5% during each round of the voting process. The Fan Vote will be combined with the results from the Selection Committee, an elite group of journalists, commentators, broadcasters and former Winners. The 2009 O'Brien Winner will be announced on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards Show airing Dec. 10 on ESPN and will be honored at the 33rd Annual Davey O'Brien Awards Dinner held at The Fort Worth Club on Feb. 15, 2010 in Fort Worth, Texas.
On the first 'play,' Venoy shadowed Quincy and actually dove for the football to make an interception attempt! The quarterback (Romar) and receiver (Quincy) had a little miscommunication on the route giving Venoy an ample opportunity to make the play. Unfortunately -- dare I say -- Coach Romar underthrew the ball and not even a sprawling Overton could make the catch. Needless to say, Venoy's antics were entertaining and left the whole team in hysterics. After practice, Coach Romar stopped by and gave a quick update on the workouts: How do the guys look through the first couple of weeks of pre-season workouts? Lorenzo Romar: "This group is very attentive, compliant and quick. They've shown that they're quick learners at this point. This group is pretty together. We're just laying the foundation of our philosophy right now and our guys are looking pretty good." How do the freshmen look to you so far? Romar: "They're quick learners as well. It helps that we have so many returners that we don't have to re-teach all over again. It's more of a review session for a lot of guys than it is something that is just brand new." What do you want to see between now and the start of practice on Oct. 16? Romar: "I'd like to see us go out and play a little bit like football. Football goes out and the coaches can't work with them (in the offseason), but yet by the time they have a spring game, they function well. I'd like us by the time we get out to practice, functioning in a full-court game."
The Husky football program will appear on live national television again this weekend when it plays at Notre Dame (12:30 p.m. PT) on NBC. It will mark the seventh time Washington has appeared on NBC since the 1980 season and the third against Notre Dame (the others were 1996 and 2004). The UW also played on NBC in 1980 (Michigan - Rose Bowl), 1981 (Iowa - Rose Bowl) and 1989 (Colorado, Florida - Freedom Bowl). FSN Northwest will debut this week's Huskies All-Access on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and will have additional showings on Thursday (1 & 6 p.m.), Friday (12:30 p.m.) and Saturday (12 Noon). Coach Sarkisian's weekly radio show will take place tonight at 7 p.m., live from Anthony's Homeport on Shilshole Bay. The show will air live locally on 950 KJR and throughout the Pacific Northwest on the Washington ISP Sports Network (welcome to KWOK AM 930 AM to the network!). The show will also be streamed live via Dawg Channel All-Access on GoHuskies.com. Saturday's game will also feature a live radio broadcast and Internet streak on the Washington ISP Sports Network (the same as the coach's show each week). KJR 950 will begin its game day coverage at 8 a.m. and will culminate 11 hours of coverage well after the conclusion of the game.
At noon, after a thrilling 40-minute NCAA rules education session, UW athletes, staff and coaches assembled in Bank of America Arena for a BBQ lunch and program. Led by WSAAC (Washington Student-Athlete Advisory Council) president Jake Schmitt, the program consisted of speeches by athletic director Scott Woodward and coaches Lesle Gallimore, Jim McLaughlin, Greg Metcalf, Richard Reece and Steve Sarkisian. Afterwards, the athletes were treated to a special volleyball match pitting members of WSAAC against various sport coaches - including Heather Tarr and Lorenzo Romar. To the surprise of most in attendance, the coaches jumped out to an 18-11 lead and eventually won the match 21-18. The biggest cheer of the match occurred when Romar stuffed one of the WSAAC kill attempts for a point for the coaches! The Washington Husky men's basketball team will begin its defense of last year's Pac-10 regular season title on Friday, October 16 - the first official day the NCAA allows Division I hoops teams to begin practicing. Husky fans are invited to come out to Bank of America Arena for a special "First Day of Practice" celebration/preview event. The third-ranked UW volleyball team will host UCLA at 6 p.m. (it was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. but was moved up to accommodate this event). Afterward, the Husky men's basketball team will take the court. Plans currently include team introductions, a full-squad scrimmage and a dunk contest. Word on the street is that head coach Lorenzo Romar will serve as the emcee and that the event will be nationally televised! More information to come, so keep watching GoHuskies.com.
Nick Taylor was the top Husky in fifth place after shooting an even par 72. Darren Wallace was one stroke behind and tied for ninth, shooting a 1-over 73. Charlie Hughes (pictured hitting at the green on No. 9) and Richard Lee are tied for 16th after each shooting a 3-over 75. Chris Williams was 7-over 79 after round one and tied for 58th. Round 2 is currently underway. Results for round one and live scoring for round two can be found at the PING/Golfweek Invitational Tournament Central by clicking here. Husky head coach Matt Thurmond has set the lineup for the PING/Golfweek Invitational being held this weekend at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton. There are no surprises in that the three returning All-Americans -- Nick Taylor, Darren Wallace and Richard Lee -- are among the three in the lineup. Perhaps more surprising is that freshmen Chris Williams and Charlie Hughes are playing this weekend, despite the No. 3 ranked Huskies returning its top six players from last season. The ascension of the freshmen into the mix attests to the strength of the Huskies this season. It will be interesting to see Thurmond juggle his 12-man roster, as he has said the group is his most talented collection of Huskies ever in his regime. Tee times and more information about the tournament are available at the PING/Golfweek Invitational Tournament Central.

There will be a photo gallery, quotes, notes and stats as well as a recap of the game. Thanks For Following The Dawg Blawg (8:41 p.m.) The Washington athletic communciations staff will be leaving the press box in a few minutes to go to the field for postgame press responsibilities. Thanks for following this blog and our Twitter feed (@UWSportsNews) tonight. Check GoHuskies.com after the game for a full recap, statistics, photos and more. Stanford Drives After UW Turnover On Downs (8:39 p.m.) The Cardinal flexed its rushing game muscle to drive halfway down the field after the Huskies failed on its second fourth down conversion of the game to take a 34-14 lead with 9:20 left in the game. Strange Night, Indeed (8:29 pm.) Another strange play in the game occurred early in the third period. With third down and long, Locker takes the snap and drops back to pass. As the pocket collapsed, he fumbled the ball. Locker recovered while the ball was falling out of his hands, grabbed it and took off running around the left side of the line for 11 yards and a first down. The crowd had assumed the play was dead earlier but was silenced with the first down. End Of The Third Period (8:25 p.m.) The third quarter ends with the Huskies driving. Washington gave up just three points in the quarter despite Stanford holding a major edge in possession time. For the game, Stanford leads the rushing stats battle 208-85. Huskies Losing Turnover Battle (8:12 p.m.) After a scramble on third down and two, Jake Locker tossed an ill-advised pass into the middle of the field and Stanford's Delano Howell grabbed his second interception of the game. The Huskies now have one fumble and two interceptions, while forcing the Cardinal into two fumbles - giving the Huskies a minus-1 in the turnover category. Bronson Sees First Career Action (8:08 p.m.) Freshman Demitrius Bronson entered the game with just more than 8:00 left in the third period, his first action of his career. A native of Kent, Wash., Bronson signed with the UW in 2008 but missed that season due to academics. He entered the UW in the spring and was able to go through spring practice. Halftime Photo Gallery (7:52 p.m.) Tough First Half For The Dawgs (7:33 p.m.) Washington heads into the locker room down 24-14 at the half. A couple of solid offensive drives keep the UW hopes alive as the defense has had a tough time keeping the Stanford rushing game in check. The Cardinal rushed for a total of 194 yards on 25 carries in the half. Stanford senior running back Toby Gerhart rushed for 156 yards on 13 carries (12.7 yards per rush). Jake Locker went 9-for-16 for 125 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT in the half. Chris Polk led the Huskies on the ground with 52 yards on 11 carries. TOUCHDOWN WASHINGTON! (7:07 p.m.) A nice four-play drive by the Huskies after holding Stanford to just a field goal was culminated with a 19-yard touchdown pass from Jake Locker to Jermaine Kearse! It sure doesn't seem like it since he has several key catches this season, but that was Kearse's first TD pass this season. Stanford leads 17-14. After the TD, the Huskies gathered on the sideline and jumped up-and-down mosh-pit style! The Huskies seem fired-up, for sure. It's Going To Be A Strange One! (6:43 p.m.) Before anyone could even take a breath, Stanford's Toby Gerhart took a handoff around the right end and went 61 yards for a touchdown. Cornerback Desmond Trufant (one of two true freshman starters, along with Talia Crichton) had the best shot at him inside the 10 yard line but was blocked. It was the longest run of Gerhart's career at Stanford. The score is now 14-7 Stanford with 1:43 remaining in the first period. TOUCHDOWN WASHINGTON!! (6:40 p.m.) One of the strangest plays of the season resulted in a Washington touchdown! Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck rushed forward a few yards, then inexplicably passed it just a tad behind the running back, who missed the toss. UW's Justin Glenn picked it up and ran it 51 yards untouched for a touchdown. The play was reviewed and called a TD. UW Losing early Turnover Battle (6:36 p.m.) With a third down and one-yard to go, Jake Locker and Ryan Tolar's exchange from center was mishandled and fumbled. The Stanford defense covered it for its second takeaway of the game. This, a play after a Locker timeout narrowly averted a false start penalty when Goodwin was in motion and Paul Homer jerked forward. Huskies Get A Break (6:27 p.m.) With Stanford driving to Washington's 17-yard-line, the Husky "D" rose to the occasion and forced a fumble of Cardinal running back Toby Gerhart. After a short gain, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim forced a fumble that was recovered by E.J. Savannah at the 11-yard-line. The Huskies have forced at least one turnover in each of its three games this season. First Drive Ends In Howell's Hands (6:18 p.m.) The Huskies' first drive looked promising after Quinton Richardson took the opening kickoff 35 yards, then some tough running by Chris Polk drove the ball into Stanford territory. But, a Locker pass intended for D'Andre Goodwin was intercepted at the 2-yard-line by Delano Howell. Husky fans might remember Delano's brother, Dan, a linebacker for the Huskies a few seasons ago and a frequent visitor to Husky Stadium these days as an alum. Stanford Takes Early Lead (6:10 p.m.) Well, that wasn't the start the Huskies wanted. Stanford's Chris Owusu returned his third kickoff for a TD this season - tying a Pac-10 record in just the third game of the year for the Cardinal. It was the first kick returned for a TD against Washington since UCLA in 2007. Washington Wins The Toss (6:08 p.m.) The Huskies won the toss for the second week in a row and elected to defer to the second half. The UW will kickoff and will defend the North end zone. Jake Locker, Donald Butler, Daniel Te'o-Nesheim and Ryan Tolar were captains. Greg Walker and Nate Fellner were honorary captains for this week. (Right) Scribes from Seattle are pecking away at their laptops so it MUST be gametime! Stanford Band takes the field (5:45 p.m.) One of the more (ahem) "interesting" marching bands in the country, the Stanford Band has taken the field for their pre-game show. They are currently playing "Spoonman" by Soundgarden and running all over the field. A few of them are playing catch with oversized frisbees. A giant pink Pig appears to be circling... kinda kooky. (updated: apparently it is some type of a tribute to Swine Flu?).
The team is warming up and things are starting to cool off here at Stanford Stadium. The temperature here is currently 89 degrees and reportedly got as high as mid-90's. The Huskies are wearing purple pants and are sporting the new white jerseys that Husky fans had a chance to see for the first time (on a mannequin, of course) at the Spring Game.
Gameday Preview Links Here are a few UW and Stanford-related links on pregame coverage today (notice a theme?):
Answers to a few things you might have wondered: Q: What's does the team do on the road? A: Once the team leaves campus, usually early afternoon on Friday, it takes a charter flight to the city of its opponent (this week, the team flew into San Jose). Usually, they will board a bus and go straight to the stadium and check out the locker room and the field. Generally this "walk-through" is designed to simply give the players and coaches a chance to stretch their legs and get a feel for the environment. The team will then either head to a restaurant or the hotel, eat a good meal then settle into a couple hours of meetings and preparation before bed. On game day, the team will wake-up and have breakfast, conduct more meetings, have a pregame meal, get taped and head to the stadium. It all depends on the game time. This week, with the late game time, there will be a little more rest time than usual.
A: Yes. Bob Rondeau, Chuck Nelson and Elise Woodward, along with Terry Ryan - the engineer, travel on the team charter. There are a few other folks, such as spotters and statisticians, who travel separately. It takes a pretty big crew to be able to provide radio broadcasts to Husky fans and they do a great job! A: How do the television announcers know so much about the two teams, particularly since they don't follow them all year? Q: Generally, the head coach and both coordinators meet with the television announcers sometime before each game. Sometimes, they all talk via conference call. Most of the time, however, they will meet in person on Fridays. At home, that meeting usually takes place early in the afternoon - before the team walk-through. On the road, those meetings are often at the hotel after the team arrives. The TV meetings are usually pretty interesting because the coaches go through a great deal of "insider" type of information in order for the broadcast to go well. It also provides a great opportunity for the coaches to promote the positive aspects of the program - which almost always gets discussed on the telecasts Senior cross country runner and Mukilteo, Wash. native Kelly Spady was chosen as the Everett Herald's Athlete of the Week following his win at the Sundodger Invitational last Saturday in West Seattle. The Herald spoke with Spady about the team's early season success and which Huskies might get the best book deal. Click here to read the full interview. • PHOTO GALLERY OF VIDEO SHOOT
Husky head coach Matt Thurmond and players Nick Taylor, Chris Killmer and Darren Wallace all helped out in the taping of the show. Killmer showed the crew around the practice area and all the gadgets that the team has to help improve their games. Taylor showed off the lounge upstairs, where player watch TV, play games, study and relax. Wallace showed the crew the lockers. At the end, all of them played doubles ping pong. Once the filming was completed the guys and the crew embarked on a ping pong tournament. Stay tuned for the video in the upcoming weeks and be sure to check out the photo gallery of the film shoot. Congrats to former Washington Husky star Nate Robinson for his new contract with the New York Knicks! Robinson announced the signing on his Twitter page this morning after the deal was officially done. The New York Post, New York Daily News and other media outlets had reported the two sides were close to a final deal late last night.
The Husky women worked through another tough defense practice Thursday on Harshman Court in Bank of America Arena.
The team was first put through its paces with various conditioning drills, led by sports performance coach Matt Ludwig. Then coaches Tia Jackson, Judy Spoelstra, Loree Payne and Fred Applin took over, coaching the defense. The Husky defense appears to be shaping up nicely. The 2009-10 squad isn't afraid to get aggressive. More than one player got knocked down during practice today. Last night, the Huskies participated in a phone-a-thon for ticket sales. The women of the Purple and Gold called prior ticket holders and tried to sell season tickets, mini-plans and individual tickets. (Check out pictures here!) Tickets are still available by calling the Husky Ticket Office at 206-543-2200 or online at GoHuskies.com.
Husky assistant coach Andrea VanderLende checked in from New Zealand for GoHuskies.com after day 11. Here is her wrap-up from the 11 day trip.
• Check out the latest photos in the updated Photo Gallery! Our final round in New Zealand was at Paraparaumu Golf Club. This course has hosted the New Zealand Open 12 times in the history of the Championship. Once again we had terrible weather but played through it and ended up having a great time. We paired up with a group of Paraparaumu locals who were very accommodating and helped us navigate our way around the course. This round concluded our final portion of qualifying. The girls worked hard to battle in the wind and rain to prepare for the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Country Club in Redmond. After playing many difficult courses, we are ready to tackle our first home tournament and want to begin the year with a win on our territory.
The first Nike/Golf World Coaches poll was released today and Washington is ranked No. 2. The poll combines the resources of Golf World magazine, Nike Golf and the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA). The complete results will appear in the September 28th issue and can be viewed online now at www.golfworld.com This is the second poll to come out recently, with Washington earning a pre-season No. 3 ranking in the Golf Week poll a few weeks back. Speaking of Golf Week magazine, the Huskies are featured today in their college notebook, including a large photo of Nick Taylor. Check out the article to see how the golf team spent the final moments of last Saturday's UW-USC football game. The team is busy preparing for the PING/Golf Week Invitational at Gold Mountain in Bremerton, which starts on Saturday with a practice round. The teams will play two rounds on Sunday and conclude with a final round on Monday. GoHuskies.com will have a preview of the tournament, which is free to fans, sometime today. Richardson played for the Huskies from 1993-96 and was a first-team Pac-10 all conference and all-academic selection in 1996. She was a part of a stellar Husky squad that qualified for NCAA postseason play three consecutive years. The team captain in 1996, she won the team's Unsung Hero award in 1993 and 1994 and won the Jeannine Jensen award in her senior season. After graduating from UW, she completed her doctorate in Pharmacy at UW and works for Group Health as a specialty pharmacy coordinator. Richardson is married with two young sons, Hayden and Luca. She currently serves on the Big W Club board as a representative for women's soccer. She said the best part about being a Husky is the friendships she created around the soccer field, many of which continue today, and is thankful for the opportunity she had to compete at one of the highest levels of women's soccer in the country. Also honored last Friday, due to inclement weather in the previous game, was Dr. Martin Mankey and his wife, Diane, who have been huge supporters of Husky Athletics and specifically Husky women's soccer for years. A Tyee member, scholarship endower and football and basketball season ticket holder, Dr. Mankey is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle surgery who has operated on several Husky athletes. Here are reports and a photo gallery from days seven through 10 of the 11 day trip. • Check out the latest photos in the updated Photo Gallery! Today we played Waikanae Golf Club. We were supposed to have terrible weather but once again the golf gods were with us. It was a bit chilly, but the wind and quick greens made this course very challenging. Waikanae is a traditional club, having one of the largest memberships in all of New Zealand. We also learned that Steve Williams, Tiger Wood's caddy, spent most of his childhood learning the game of golf at Waikanae Golf Club. There were tons of photos of Steve and Tiger displayed around the club. Day 9 The day has finally come!! We are off to play the highly anticipated Cape Kidnappers in Hawke's Bay. Cape Kidnappers is the host to the 2009 Kiwi Challenge PGA Tour Event. The defending champion Hunter Mahan and last year's runner-up Anthony Kim will be joined by Sean O'Hair and Camilo Villegas for a 36-hole stroke play event. This event will take place just around the corner on Nov. 11 and 12. This course lived up to all of its expectations. Once you made your way past the gate you had about a five mile drive that involved many hills and winding roads to reach the club house. On the drive we saw many sheep running around freely in the fields; in fact, our bus actually had to slow down to make sure we didn't hit one. We had a terrible forecast for the day but we lucked out because it turned out to be a beautiful day. Once again, it was a picturesque day and we had our cameras out on every hole. Day 8 Our next round in Lake Taupo was at Wairakei International Golf Course. This was a beautiful and challenging golf course that is ranked in Golf Digest's Top 100. It is a classic country club style course aligned with several trees and some hidden bunkers. It is a challenging course off the tee and placement was necessary in order to avoid severely sloped bunkers. The course was in great shape with fast greens that definitely challenged the girls on the team. Day 7 It's Saturday back in Washington and Sunday in New Zealand. We are in Taupo sitting around the breakfast table following the Washington USC football game on our iPhones. The team was excited to played Taupo Golf Club, but to be honest we were definitely more excited about Washington beating USC!!! Karinn's dad was giving us play-by-play and we all screamed when he finally said HUSKIES WIN!!!!! Now, off to play some golf and for the team to compete in our first qualifying round of the season.

Long-time men's soccer coach Dean Wurzberger checked in to GoHuskies.com today to give his thoughts on his busy summer, the Seattle Sounders and his 2009 Husky team. To read Dean's enjoyable blog, click here.
Wurzberger is in his 18th season with the UW men's soccer program. A former Seattle Sounders reserve-team player himself into the 1970s, Wurzberger coached alongside current Sounders coach Sigi Schmid at UCLA before coming to Seattle. Since coming to UW in 1992, Wurzberger has led UW to 12 NCAA appearances, including 11 of the last 14 years. He was named the 2004 Pac-10 Coach of the Year and has amassed a 206-102-35 record in his 17+ seasons.
Several group shots were taken too, including by class, point guards, forwards, Tacoma guys, LA guys and several other groups that were hard to figure out. The team sported their road jerseys for the upcoming season. You can check them out on the photo to the right. For the most part, the guys had a light day of activities. After the photos, they held a short open gym. The Pac-10 office sent out a one-sheet today outlining the league's success against other conferences. You can read the complete report by clicking here. A few of the more notable highlights: • The Pac-10 has the second-best record against non-league FBS opponents as well as against BCS automatic qualifier conferences; • The Pac-10 has played more non-league games against BCS automatic qualifying conference opponents than any other BCS AQ conference; • The Pac-10 is 19-6 (.760) in non-conference play.
Donald Butler, the Huskies' senior linebacker, added another national honor to the list as he was named the Football Writers Association of America's Nagurski Player of the Week, essentially the national defensive player of the week.
Butler, who had 12 tackles, a forced fumble and an interception in the Huskies' 16-13 win over USC, was also named Pac-10 Player of the Week and the Walter Camp Football Foundation's Defensive Player of the Week. Here's a link to the FWAA's website. SportingNews.com is starting to release it's rankings of the top basketball players for 2009-10 and several Huskies have earned national recognition from the publication. Isaiah Thomas is rated as the 8th best shooting guard for the upcoming season, while freshman Abdul Gaddy is ranked 7th among point guards. The website has yet to release its other positions.

BREMERTON, Wash. - On Monday, Gold Mountain Golf Complex played host to media day in advance of the PING/Golf Week Invitational to be hosted by the University of Washington on Sunday, Sept. 26 and Monday, Sept. 27. In addition, the UW team, currently ranked No. 2 in Golfweek's preseason rankings, was between 36 holes for the day and used the noon press conference as a short break. They played 18 in the morning and were teeing off for another 18 after lunch. The later round was their last of five over the past week being used to determine the lineup for the upcoming weekend. Every player has an equal opportunity to crack the starting squad and it can be expected that at least one (and maybe all three) of the freshman will be playing. The fact that freshmen are expected to crack the lineup should attest to the strength of the Huskies this season. The Huskies return all their top players from their squad that finished in the top five at the NCAA's last season, including three All-Americans. The addition of the freshmen and the maturation of the upperclassmen should make the Huskies not only one of the most talented squads in the nation, but one of the deepest. When asked whether this team is the best he's ever had in his nine years at Washington, Thurmond responded without hesitation, "No doubt." Perhaps the biggest reason for the confident answer from Thurmond is the return of Nick Taylor. The All-American had a very busy summer that included an impressive showing at the U.S. Open, a runner-up finish at the U.S. Publinx and a victory at the Sahalee Championship. Taylor will have plenty of star power around him this weekend, including his own All-American teammates Richard Lee and Darren Wallace. The Huskies will share the stage with defending NCAA Champion Matt Hill of North Carolina State and others among Golfweek's preseason top 10: No. 2 Morgan Hoffmann of Oklahoma State, No. 4 Bud Cauley of Alabama, No. 6 Peter Uihlein of Oklahoma State, No. 8 John Peterson of LSU and No. 10 Cameron Peck, a freshman at Texas A&M out of Olympia, Wash. In addition, of Golfweek's preseason top-10 teams, five will challenge the 7,152-yard, par-72 Olympic Course at Gold Mountain. Leading the way is No. 2 Oklahoma State, No. 4 Texas A&M, No. 5 Arizona State and No. 9 Alabama. Also in the 15-team field are No. 12 Louisiana State, No. 14 Texas Christian, No. 16 USC, No. 23 Colorado State, No. 26 North Carolina State and No. 29 UNLV. The field of 15 teams will have a practice round on Saturday and then play two rounds on Sunday, followed by the final on Monday. Live scoring from Golfstat.com, tee time pairings (not available quite yet), and more information can be found on GoHuskies.com's tournament central page. Once inside the gym, the Huskies settled into more conditioning drills with sports performance coach Matt Ludwig, working on agility, speed and balance. After the drills were completed, the ladies dove headfirst into secondary break workouts. Coaches Tia Jackson, Judy Spoelstra, Loree Payne and Fred Applin walked the team through several drills designed to help the team in transition. The Huskies looked sharp, hitting their rebound assignments and sprinting down the court well. Tomorrow, the team takes video mug shots for the video board, new mug shots for TV use and new team photos. After that, the Huskies will head back to East Gym for defense practice. More updates tomorrow! Washington finished up play at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio back on Friday, but the host Roadrunners still had a match to play against Middle Tennessee State on Saturday, so the All-Tournament Team was not named until that point. The Huskies swept both opponents to take the tournament title, and were thusly rewarded with three of the six players named to the team. Junior Becky Perry was chosen tournament MVP, as she led UW in kills in each match with 12 against UTSA and 13 against MTSU, while hitting .467 for the weekend and providing seven blocks. Senior Tamari Miyashiro was also named to the team. The defensive stalwart had 33 digs over the weekend and passed the 2,000 career digs mark, becoming the second Husky ever to do so. Also earning All-Tournament honors was senior Jill Collymore. She had 15 kills and five aces over the two matches and was the catalyst behind an amazing 15-point run that Washington put on Middle Tennessee State in the final set on Friday. Collymore's divebombing serve took the Huskies from 8-5 to 23-5 in the set which they went on to win 25-7, tying the record-low score for a UW opponent in the rally scoring era. Rounding out the All-Touranment Team was Leslie Clark and Ashley Mead of MTSU, and Amber Brooks of UTSA. Considering that Washington football has been through such a disappointing stretch the last few years and started out the season facing, arguably, the toughest first three games in all of college football - can you believe the Dawgs are just eight points away from being undefeated? Only a season-opening 31-23 loss to top-10 ranked LSU stands as a blemish on the UW's record. The Huskies rebounded with a resounding 42-23 win over Idaho last week before shocking the football world with its incredible 16-13 victory over No. 3 ranked USC yesterday. For complete coverage of the game, including notes, quotes, stats, video interviews, photo galleries (there are are some awesome shots from Max Waugh - you can buy them online through Replay Photos) and a complete game recap on GoHuskies.com. If you want to re-live the game in all its glory, apparently ESPNU will be televising it again this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. The athletic department is also working on a deal to try to make the game available for sale on DVD. Details would be announced, hopefully, on Monday or Tuesday. Here is a wrap-up of some of the news coverage from the game: The Seattle Times had a bevy of writers offering various views of the game. Bob Condotta had this recap of the game. Steve Kelley lauded Jake Locker for his leadership in the last 4:00 of the game. Jerry Brewer said there was one word that described the win.. Wow. Tacoma News Tribune's Todd Milles says happy days are back for the Huskies, while John McGrath believes the USC win will go down as one of the best in school history. Milles also wrote a sidebar on the solid play of the UW linebacking corps. Popular Everett Herald scribe Scott Johnson says that the Huskies rule the day in his game recap and also wrote a second story about how the UW linebackers worked all summer to prove themselves. Johnson, who must have been the busiest guy around yesterday, also wrote a story about how proud former Husky QB Chris Chandler was of the Dawgs' victory. The SeattlePi.com's Art Theil says that Sarkisian's revival of the Husky program is going pretty quickly. Greg Johns felt Locker's play was the difference in the game. For a SoCal perspective, a number of media outlets are quick to offer up an explanation of USC's loss, including the Los Angeles Times, the Riverside Press Enterprise (which included a nice note on the UW's local product - Chris Polk), the L.A. Daily News and the Orange County Register. Husky assistant coach Andrea VanderLende checked in from New Zealand for GoHuskies.com after day five. Here are reports and a photo gallery from day five of the 11 day trip. • Check out the latest photos in the updated Photo Gallery! We took the next day as a travel day to cross the country to Taupo. We have an amazing view from our hotel room of Lake Taupo. This area is famous for the bungee jumping and sky diving. On our drive we stopped in Auckland and went to the top of Mount Eden for an amazing view. Today we played the Kinloch Club which is a Jack Nicklaus course design. The other courses that we have played offered amazing views but this course was more of a links style course. This course was challenging but in excellent shape and everyone enjoyed playing a different style of golf course. We have been lucky to have great weather, but today our luck ran out. The high was 50 degrees with light rain and wind. The weather obviously wasn't that terrible because half the team went on to play another 18 holes. The course was that amazing!
The Head Professional was very kind to give us an introduction to the golf course. He told us his "friends" were out on the golf course and for us to be careful of the electric fences. The Kinloch Club brings in cows to eat the grass. The cows have been out for the last month so the rough was minimal. They find a section of rough and rope it off with electric fences and move it to different locations around the course. On our walk home from dinner we came across the Hole-In-One Challenge. It's where you can purchase golf balls to hit into a floating island in the middle of Lake Taupo. If you happen to make a hole in one you have the chance to win money, bungee jumping or skydiving. Since I was the only professional who made the trip, I had to give it a try. I was unsuccessful but it was definitely fun trying! Follow the Huskies today on the GoHuskies.com Dawg Blawg! Check back throughout the day for updates. Please check out all of today's coverage on GoHuskies.com! There is a photo gallery, links to videos, quotes, notes and stats in our recap. Click here to read all about Washington's exciting 16-13 victory over USC. Watch Steve Sarkisian's Press Conference: Check out what Coach Sark has to say about the Huskies big win by clicking here. Paid Subscription required. End of Game: Hey, what did I miss while I was gone? WHAT??? SERIOUS. Washington did what? Congrats to the Dawgs and Steve Sarkisian on a landmark victory!! Go Dawgs!!! 10:08 fourth: Huskies are moving the ball and on the 28 and have a 3rd and 21. Post-game duties will keep me from reporting on the Blawg for awhile, so if you're following from afar, tune into Gametracker and UW Twitter for the latest updates. 14:21 fourth quarter: Donald Butler stops Stafon Johnson on a rush attempt on third and one to force the USC punt. Butler has nine tackles, a forced fumble and a pick in the game! End of Three: In what has turned into a defensive battle, USC and UW are tied at 10 after three quarters. It has been a very exciting game and will be interesting to see if UW can keep up the great defensive effort and punch one into the endzone. The Huskies honored tight end Mark Bruener as the Husky legend. Also, attendance for the game is officially 61,889. 3:16 clock: The Huskies make it a trifecta of turnovers in their favor with Donald Butler stepping in front of a short pass to David Ausberry for the pick. USC QB Aaron Corp tried to force it into double coverage and the Huskies were having none of that business. UW ball! 5:29 clock: Huskies don't capitalize on the turnover and have to punt the ball away. USC will start their drive on the 42-yard line. USC is currently winning the battle of field position but have not been able to capitalize. 8:51 clock: Perhaps in a case where amazing athletic ability can be costly, Stanley Havili caught a pass and appeared to maintain his balance and not go down. He tried to make forward progress while cradling the ball and lost control, which the Huskies jumped on to take over. The Huskies are leading the turnover battle, 2-0, with USC coughing the ball up twice in their red zone. 10:14 clock: USC's Joe McKnight apparently hurt his left leg, causing a momentary delay in action. 14:28 clock: The Huskies received the ball first in the second half, but went three and out. Halftime: Football fans got to see two contrasting philosophies at the end of the first half. Washington got the ball with just over two minutes remaining and chose to run the ball and go into the locker room content with a tie. They were unable to move the ball and were at 1:23 and had to give the ball back. USC decided they wanted to try to tack more points on the board and got into field goal range before getting stuffed on a 3rd and 1. They were forced to hurry their field goal unit onto the field and try a 40+ yarder, but ultimately the clock expired and the Huskies escaped into the locker room tied with the No. 3 ranked team in the nation. The UW will get the ball first in the second half and you would have to say they have momentum on the side. They trailed by 10 early and were able to batten down the hatches and weather the early USC storm. 4:11 clock: The Huskies tied it up with a 28-yard Erik Folk field goal, but were inches away from having a 1st and goal instead of fourth and 4. Locker scrambled right and found Kavario Middleton on the one-yard line by the side, but Middleton had stepped out and jumped back in bounds to make it illegal touching on the Huskies. They settled for the field goal and we have a new ballgame. 7:57 clock: Mason Foster caused the first turnover of the game, the third time this season he has been involved in a turnover by the opposition, to give the Huskies the ball back. But, a few penalties made it difficult for the UW to get anything going on the ensuing drive and they were forced to punt the ball away. I can't say enough about the job Will Mahan has done so far this season. He has great directional skills and hits the ball for a lot of hangtime. In between quarters: The University recognized softball player Danielle Lawrie, who won the Softball Player of the Year and was a finalist for the Honda Award. The last few days have been very busy for the team as they had an alumni game yesterday and received their National Championship rings in the Zone. End of First: UW got on the board right before the end of the first quarter when Jake Locker marched the Huskies down the field and scored on a four-yard run. It was important that the Huskies answered back quickly. Score is USC 10, UW 7. 4:36 clock: Jordan Congdon puts USC up 10-0 with a 42-yard field goal. The Husky defense stepped up at the end of the drive and kept USC in check, after the Trojans were seemingly going to march down the field again. So, a moral/morale victory for the Husky defense...we'll see if Jake Locker and the offense has an answer. 8:29 clock: The Husky drive stalled at about midfield after initially moving the ball on the ground and in the air. The USC defensive line is definitely going to provide a stiff test for the Huskies today and earned credit for two sacks on the initial drive. The UW is going to have catch some breaks today and cause some turnovers to try and help swing the momentum back towards their direction. 12:28 clock: Way too easy for the Trojans on their first drive, as they marched down the field 80 yards in six plays and put a quick seven on the board. The Trojans' outstanding junior running back Joe McKnight punched it in from four yards out to give USC the early 7-0 advantage. Pre-kickoff: Hello Dawg fans! Both teams have run through the tunnel and we're about ready to go. The Huskies may be catching a few "breaks" today, as USC's Taylor Mays is out for the game. Starting QB Matt Barkley will take a back seat to Aaron Corp too, it appears. So, they lose a couple high school All-Americans and will plug a couple of other All-Americans to fill the hole! Three-year varsity men's eight coxswain and UW alumna Katelyn Snyder has brought in quite the haul of medals over her career. Here's a feature story that ran in her hometown newspaper, the Winter Park / Maitland (Fla) Observer.
Pondexter and Thomas arrived and on the stage was Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmidt. Waiting on deck after Pondexter and Thomas was Sounders FC forward Steve Zakuani. The Husky duo took the stage and were greeted nicely by the crowd in attendance, which included many Husky fans. They did a great job and did the program proud on the stage showing both humor and humility. The duo waited around until Quincy's former classmate Spencer Hawes showed up and then headed home. All-in-all a great event that the Huskies are glad to help promote for the official Husky partner, KJR radio. As part of the fund-raising Groz with Gas-A-Thon on KJR Radio, Lorenzo Romar will be appearing live at Anthony's on Pier 66 in the 4-4:30 pm range today. Isaiah Thomas and Quincy Pondexter will too be on the air, around 5:15-5:45. Check out KJR's official web site for more information and to bid on auction items. With another big crowd expected at Husky Stadium tomorrow for Washington's big Pac-10 opener against third-ranked USC, we thought it might be a good idea to provide a reminder of a few informational items and web links that might help ensure a great Game Day experience. For the second-straight week The Zone will open at 9 a.m. and will feature food, music, beverages, interactive games and contests and will serve as the site of the official KJR pre-game show with the Husky Honks. The 2009 NCAA national champion UW softball team will be recognized in a special ring ceremony in The Zone at 11:30 a.m. All-America pitcher Danielle Lawrie and head coach Heather Tarr will be guests on KJR at approximately 10 a.m. The team is scheduled to arrive at Husky Stadium at approximately 10:40 a.m. and will conduct its popular Husky Walk through The Zone upon arrival. Former UW tight end Mark Bruener will be honored as the Husky Legend between the third and fourth quarters of the game. He will also appear on the pre-game radio show and will most likely be hanging out in the Big "W" Club tent in The Zone before the game. There are still tickets available by calling (206) 543-2200, visiting the online box office at GoHuskies.com or on a walk-up basis on gameday at Husky Stadium. The stadium parking lots will open at 6 a.m. for early risers looking to get a head start on tailgating or just hanging out before the game. There are a variety of options to get to the game, including Bus, Car, Boat and Bicycle. If you can't make the game, there are numerous ways to follow along live: The game will be televised regionally to 52 percent of the country by ABC, broadcast on the radio through the Washington ISP Sports Network, streamed through the Internet by Dawg Channel All-Access on GoHuskies.com and broadcast on satellite radio by XM / Sirius. There will also be a live statistical Gametracker and a Game Day Dawg Blawg on GoHuskies.com as well as updates via Twitter.com/UWSportsNews.
Husky assistant coach Andrea VanderLende checked in from New Zealand for GoHuskies.com after day four. Here are reports and a photo gallery from day three and four of the 11 day trip. Day Three Day Four Kauri Cliffs was one of the two golf courses that hosted the 2008 Kiwi Challenge PGA Tour Event Challenge. In 2008 the Kiwi Challenge featured four of the top young players in the world: Adam Scott, Brandt Snedeker, Anthony Kim and Hunter Mahan. They played 18 holes each day over two days on two of the most picturesque courses in the world, Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers. I personally felt this was the best golf course I have ever played, but we were playing Cape Kidnappers in a few days, so it may change. Can't wait...it's great to be Husky! GO DAWGS!!! ROSLYN, Wash. - The Husky men's golf team competed in a 54-hole intrasquad tournament on Thursday at Suncadia on the Tumble Creek course. After spending several days examining options - including a potential closed-circuit showing in Husky Stadium - the league office brokered a deal with FSN to televise the game on one of the network's digital channels, Fox College Sports (FCS). Kudos should be handed out to the Pac-10, FSN and FSN Northwest (which is obligated to show the Washington State/USC game that is part of the league package - but agreed to take a potential ratings hit to provide Husky fans a way to watch the Dawgs play) for working to find a solution that benefits everyone - especially Huskyv fans! For information on how to receive FCS, please click here or call your local cable provider. FCS is generally part of a "Sports Tier" of programming, so your local cable provider should have that information available. If you have Comcast as your cable provider, the number to call is 1-800-COMCAST. Here is a pretty good website that has channel listings in various parts of the country.
The women's hoops team continued its fall training camp today as they went for a 1.5-mile run at 6:15 this morning. The women had a time to beat and the majority of the team finished in the allotted time.
The Huskies are back on the court for defense practice at 2:30pm today, but get the day off of weight training. Check back later this afternoon for a more detailed practice report! Washington's dominant effort at the Tampa Twice Tournament last weekend attracted the attention of ESPN.com, which currently has a feature on the Dawgs up as the lead on its College Sports page. The feature looks at how the Huskies have bounced back from their two-point loss in the NCAA Quarterfinals last year and positioned themselves as legitimate contenders this season following the sweeps of No. 9 Minnesota and No. 4 Florida in Tampa. Here is a brief excerpt... Miyashiro, one of the two players with the program when UW won its first national title in 2005, and Hagglund, who earned All-America honors for the first time in 2008, are keys to the Huskies' success. Together, they ignite an offense that has been almost perfectly balanced and virtually unstoppable. The Huskies have four players averaging more than two kills per set, led by fifth-year senior outside hitter Jill Collymore at 3.29, and are fourth in the nation with a .325 team hitting percentage. "I think I've got the best offensive arsenal in the country at my disposal," Hagglund said. "All of our hitters are great weapons and it makes it hard for our opponents to defend us. And with our passing, it makes it a lot easier for me." To view the lead photo for the story click here. For the full story click here.
The women of Washington hit the North Gym of Bank of America Arena to work on some shooting drills during their second day of fall practice.
Overall, the Huskies look good. Washington's offense appears to be shaping up... Lots of attention was paid to good passing and quick layups from every possible angle. The women look leaner and more athletic than ever, which ties in to what head coach Tia Jackson said yesterday about the team in this story. After the shooting drills were completed, the Huskies did some additional conditioning drills, which seemed to be focused on balance and quickness. The the ladies headed down to the weight room to lift. Tomorrow morning, the Huskies are slated for an early-morning run and then defense practice tomorrow afternoon. More updates to come tomorrow after practice!
NBA point guard Jamal Crawford and former Husky forward Jamaal Williams were scrimmaging with the team. Crawford and Quincy Pondexter had some really nice head-to-head battles, with the NBA player showing off his ability to get to the hoop and finish. From the action I saw, there were lots of dunks, including two massive breakaways by Clarence Trent and a thunderous put back slam by Matthew Bryan-Amaning. There was also plenty of great shooting on display, with Darnell Gant and C.J. Wilcox connecting on several occasions from the outside. After they finished, Crawford hung around and talked with the players. He seemed to have some encouraging words for Pondexter and was chummy with Abdul Gaddy and Isaiah Thomas (pictured). ABC released its coverage map for Saturday's 12:30 p.m. (PT) window, which includes the USC at Washington game as well as Nebraska at Virginia Tech and Arizona at Iowa. The Huskies versus the Trojans will be shown to 52 percent of the country.
The new United Football League released its training camp rosters for its four teams and there were three former Huskies on those rosters, including two with regular-season NFL experience.
Wide receiver Sonny Shackelford was listed on the California Redwoods roster. Longtime NFL-er Tony Parrish, a safety, is with the Las Vegas Locomotives and running back Rich Alexis will play for the New York Sentinels. The first game of the UFL's schedule is Oct. 8 in Vegas, when the Locomotives take on California. Two days later, New York faces the Florida Tuskers in Orlando. For much more on the UFL, check out the league's official website.
The women's golf team has arrived in New Zealand. Assistant Coach Andrea Vanderlende is submitting photos and reports during the trip. Here are some excerpts from her photo captions:
It took us awhile to get through customs due to the soil on our golf shoes. New Zealand is very protective of their land. We met our driver and tour guide and loaded our luggage into the bus. Having a bus driver is very nice especially because people drive on the opposite sides of the road compared to the United States. We all checked in and settled into our hotel rooms. Shortly after we decided to do some exploring in Auckland. It was about 10 am and we wouldn't have minded a nap but we know we have to stay up to adjust to the time change. We all took a walk to Takapuna beach which was only a 5 minute walk from our hotel. We wanted to make our way downtown and ended up taking a ferry into the city. It was beautiful and at times reminded us of Seattle. The even have a Sky Tower which is similar to the Space Needle that offers great views as well as bungee jumping. In action on the golf course, the University of Washington Huskies defeated the Gulf Harbour Club Team by 13 strokes. The low individual in the match was Molly Arronsson with a 73 and in second place was Karinn Dickinson with at 74.
They hit the weights and did some conditioning for a bit before all gathering on the court for the first time around 2:15. The team ran through some footwork drills and other basketball drills early in the session. The players then ran a controlled full-court scrimmage that saw many stops in action for moments of coaching and other pointers.
A couple standout from a shooting perspective were Elston Turner and C.J. Wilcox. Both showed great form and range from outside and could form a tough combination to defend on the perimeter. Abdul Gaddy showed off his penetration skills, often getting into the lane and dropping dimes into the hands of open men. Tyreese Breshers was out on the floor and was very aggressive on the offensive end and showed some adept passing skills. He is still getting his sea legs under him, but once he does it is easy to see he'll be able to contribute. FSN Northwest has a variety of Husky-related programming planned for this week, including the weekly Huskies All Access and a replay of the Oregon State vs. Washington game from 2000. The weekly Huskies All-Access is scheduled to debut at 6 p.m. Wednesday with additional airings at 1 p.m. on Thursday, 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. on Friday and 12 Noon on Saturday. This week's show will take a preview the upcoming Husky game against USC. At 11 a.m. Friday, FSN Northwest will televise the 2000 Oregon State at Washington game - a 33-30 Husky victory in Husky Stadium. The obvious storyline this week for UW football is the familiarity between the currently Husky program and USC's - considering that head coach Steve Sarkisian served as the offensive coordinator and Husky defensive coordinator Nick Holt was the leader of the Trojan defense last year. A number of media outlets wrote that story for today's editions. Here are a few links: Los Angeles Times writer David Wharton spent some time with Coach Sark a few weeks ago and writes how much energy Sark has brought to the UW program. Bob Condotta writes that Saturday's game will be "just be football." Tim Booth from the Associated Press filed this report looking ahead to Saturday's game among friends. Tacoma News Tribune's Todd Milles calls Saturday's game the Southern Cal Showdown. And Dawgman.com chimes in about the Mutual Admiration Society among the two programs. In a non-Sark vs. USC story, the Everett Herald's Scott Johnson explains how the UW coaches are pleased with the UW's diversified offense. The Sept. 26 Washington at Stanford football kickoff time has been set for 6 p.m. (PT) and the game will not be televised, according to the Pac-10 Conference. The league and its partners selected three of the four league games for its television package that day. Check out the story on GoHuskies.com regarding this decision. Washington and its exclusive partner, FSN Northwest, have provided live television of every game since Nov., 2006 - that's 29-straight television appearances through this Saturday's ABC game against USC.
Check out the Photo of the Week, available for purchase through Replay Photos. It's a great week to be a DAWG! Go Huskies!
According to the Seattle Times, Jon Brockman has signed with the Sacramento Kings. Here is the link. Brockman was a second round draft pick in the June draft. Typically, contracts for second rounders are not guaranteed, so Brockman will have to continue working hard and impress the coaches during camp. Congratulations Jon!
Also, Justin Dentmon has signed with Hapoel Afula, a professional team from Israel. Details can be found here.
Husky alum Paige Mackenzie had a strong showing for the third-consecutive week on the LPGA tour. She shot a 2-under 211 overall and tied for 21st at the P&G beauty NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers, Ark.
Her efforts earned her $18, 385 and has brought her total over the last three weeks to just over $75,000. For the season she has earned over $115k. Mackenzie entered Sunday tied for 15th, but shot a 1-over 72 in the final round. She shot a 70 on Saturday and 69 on Friday. Long after the final gun sounded, the post-game interviews were over and Husky Stadium's parking lots emptied, last night's 19-point victory over Idaho will go down as one of the more satisfying non-conference wins for Washington football in quite a while. Sure, there have obviously been bigger victories in Husky history. But, how many times have the South bleachers remained nearly full in the waning minutes of a game that had long since been decided? How many times have fans danced in the streets after a win over a team it was favored to beat by three touchdowns? After suffering through a difficult stretch of disappointment, Husky fans, players and coaches deserve to celebrate. Yes, third-ranked and undefeated USC comes to town in just six days and the hype machines will certainly be cranked up to 11. But, for now, the Huskies are basking in the joy of victory and it feels pretty good. A few links to news coverage of yesterday's game: Of course, GoHuskies.com has a recap of the game, statistics, quotes, notes and photos from before, during and after the win - including an awesome Max Waugh photo of Steve Sarkisian leading the team out of the tunnel. The Seattle Times' Jerry Brewer says the Husky football team enjoys that winning feeling, while the paper also has several game stories and sidebars - including this story on D'Andre Goodwin and another on Mason Foster. In Tacoma, columnist John McGrath writes about how the Huskies got a refresher on how to celebrate a victory. Everett's Rich Myhre takes a look at the offensive performance of Johri Fogerson, following his move back after a year on the defensive side of the line of scrimmage. Greg Johns of Seattlepi.com analyzed the maturity of Jake Locker as a college quarterback under the new coaching staff. From the other side of the state, the Spokane Spokesman-Review, the Lewiston Tribune and the Moscow-Pullman Daily News filed reports from the game. If you are interested in watching a replay of the game, FSN Northwest is planning to televise the game again on Monday at 11 a.m. Check local listings. Might also check Fox College Sports (FCS). Any of the three FCS channels could replay the game during the week as well.
Check back throughout the day as we'll have updates from around Husky Stadium before and during the game. Also, make sure you sign up to follow the Huskies on Twitter. Updates will be tweeted here too! • Photo Gallery: Pre-Game The Huskies won 42-23 to snap the streak. You can follow Steve Sarkisian's press conference live (premium content) by clicking here! 9:15: Fogerson scores for the second time of the day, punching it in from 3-yards out to give Washington the 41-16 lead. It is looking more and more like the streak (what streak?) will be over and Steve Sarkisian will get his first career win as a college head coach. End of Three: Marques Tuiasosopo is today's Husky Legend! You can read about him here. Tui is also an asistant strength and conditioning coach and has sideline duties for the team today. After three, the Huskies are down in total yards 318 to 300, but maintain a 35-16 lead. 3:58 (clock): De'Maundray Woolridge caps an 11-play, 65 yard drive that spanned 6:11 of the clock with a three-yard plunge up the middle. The score is now 35-16 and totatl offense is 303 for UW and 293 for Idaho. The Husky offense will need to sustain a lengthy drive here to get the defense a little bit of a break. 10:17 (clock): Another Husky makes the first big play of their career, this time Chris Izbicki, who catches a pass in the end zone for a two-yard touchdown. A great moment for Izbicki who struggled in his first two years to find a niche with the team! Washington now has five TD's in five possessions and leads 35-9. 12:11 (clock): Chris Polk punched it in from 1-yard out to cap a four play 21 yard drive, which comprised of a 3rd and 10 conversion on a 20-yard pass from Locker to D'Andre Goodwin. For Polk, it was his first career touchdown. Goodwin has three catches for 83 yards on the day. The UW leads 28-9. Interesting start to the second half: Not a good start to the second half with a fumble on the opening kickoff by UW. With Idaho knocking on the door right out of the gate, junior linebacker Mason Foster stepped in front of a Nathan Enderle pass and returned it 54 yards down the left-side line to the Idaho 21. End of 1st half: Trey Farquhar capped a 61-yard drive during the two-minute drill with his third field goal of the game, a 34-yarder. At the half, Washington leads 21-9. Overall observations, the Husky offense looked excellent and had little trouble moving the ball on their three possessions. They racked up 246 yards of total offense to 221 from the visitors. Locker was a very efficient 12-for-17 for 183 yards and two TD's. Chris Polk had 10 carries for 44 yards to lead all rushers. Defensively, the Huskies were able to get tons of pressure from their line early on in the first couple of drives. Idaho quarterback Nathan Enderle had lots of success when given time, connecting on 16-of-22 passes for 202 yards. 1:31 (clock): Three Husky possessions so far, three Husky touchdowns. This time, on 3rd and 1, Locker faked the handoff up the middle and and hit a sprinting James Johnson, who beat two defenders, for the 31-yard TD strike. Locker is 12-for-17 for 183 yards with two TD passes and one rushing. UW leads 21-6. Couple Notes; • True freshman Jordan Wallace made his Husky debut as did offensive lineman Mykenna Ikeharra this quarter -- Wallace on special teams and Ikeharra on the offensive line. • Washington is 7-for-8 on third down conversions. 6:46 (clock): Daniel Te'o-Nesheim ensures that Idaho will have to settle for a 28-yard field goal when he collected his first sack of the 2009 season and the 20th of his career. 10:47 (second quarter): The Huskies executed a screen play to a tee for a 24-yard Johri Fogerson touchdown. The offensive line let the blitzing Idaho D-line through and Locker dumped the ball off to Fogerson, who had three blockers ahead of him and just two defenders to beat. He went virtually untouched into the endzone to score his first career TD. 0:13 (clock): After getting inside the Husky redzone, back-to-back penalties left the Vandals on their heels and eventually had to settle for a 44-yard field goal, which Trey Farquhar converted. 0:38 (clock): De'Shon Matthews had to be helped off the field. He was in the Idaho backfield wreaking havoc, a theme of the first quarter so far. The Husky defensive line, while not having been credited for a sack yet, has caused three holding penalties by the Idaho O-line and raised chaos for the Vandals. Overall, Idaho has 7 penalties for 63 yards. 5:14 (clock): True freshman Talia Crichton makes his Husky debut in the second Husky defensive series. 6:24 (clock): The Jake Locker show was on display for all to see in the Huskies' opening drive. He marched the team down the field 97 yards and capped it off with a 3-yard bootleg scamper into the end zone. He was 4-for-8 on the drive for 68 yards, highlighted by a 38-yard pass on 3rd and 14 to D'Andre Goodwin in which he had to run circles around the pursuing Idaho defensive line. Chris Polk also shined on the drive rushing for 28 yards. UW leads 7-0! Additional note, that was the longest drive since UW went 97 yards against Arizona in 2007. 10:52 (clock): First four offensive plays run by UW were all to Husky running backs, two rushes and two pass attempts, one just completed for a first down to Johri Fogerson. 11:51 (clock): Couple notes from the Huskies first defensive stand, Justin Glenn started at safety, Kelani Aldrich at defensive end and Vonzell McDowell at cornerback. And from offense, the Huskies are coming out with a two tight end set.
The Huskies have won the toss and deferred to the second half. The Huskies will kickoff and defend the east endzone. 12:15: Band Day is in full swing at Husky Stadium. Approximately 3,500 band members from about 35 schools around the Northwest are in attendance. The Husky Marching Band is on the field solo right now, but will be joined by all the other bands in a moment for the national anthem. 11:45: The Huskies and Idaho are on the field warming up for the game! 52:00 minutes on the clock. Defensive end Darrion Jones is out for today's game. The coaches will rest him up today and hope to get him back next week for USC. Click here to check out some photos taken from outside the stadium a few hours ago. 9:45 a.m.:
Boats are also pouring through the cut and beginning the sailgate process. I have never sailgated personally but it is on my Husky-bucket-list.
A few of the normal game day notes and updates: The Zone will open at 9 a.m. until game time and will be open for approximately two hours after the game. See this Dawg Blawg entry for a few of the enhancements the athletic department made following last weekend's debut. Here is a great link on the best ways to Get To The Game. Tickets are still available by calling the Husky Ticket Office at (206) 543-2200 or by purchasing them online. If you can't make the game and happen to be near a computer, check out the live coverage right here on GoHuskies.com and/or listen to the radio broadcast on the Washington ISP Sports Network.
The magazine also picks Washington as their No. 3 team in their poll (click here). They rank Stanford as No.1 (a team that UW beat by 33 strokes at last season's Pac-10 Championships) and Oklahoma State as No. 2. Also, senior Golfweek writer Ron Balicki picks Washington as his No. 1 team and Nick Taylor as his No. 1 golfer. Read about it here. FINALLY....someone with a little sense ;)
The inaugural event drew thousands of Husky (and LSU) fans and was undoubtedly a great addition to the UW gameday atmosphere. After listening to feedback from fans who attended last week, a few enhancements have been made that will make The Zone an even more fun place to be this Saturday before the UW's game against Idaho! "Operationally, last weekend we wanted to err on the side of caution," said UW's senior associate athletic director O.D. Vincent. "We all felt that it was vitally important that we do our very best to ensure The Zone would be safe, something people would enjoy and would provide a great experience for our fans. We learned a great deal from that first experience, made a few tweaks to the operation and we feel good that we are going down the right path to making The Zone the place to be before and after our home games." Among the noticeable improvements are: Improved entrance and exit points; additional food and beverage ticket sales purchase points; an expanded menu and beverage selection; and a more open area for fans to enjoy the activities. An improved layout will also help ensure fans are able to better enjoy the 950 KJR pregame show with the Husky Honks. And, there will be east end zone access into and out of the stadium before and after the game (with a ticket, obviously). The Zone will open at 9 a.m. this Saturday (12:30 p.m. kickoff) and will open for approximately two hours after the conclusion of the game.
Tonight (Wed., Sept. 9), KIRO-TV will air a new episode of "KIRO 7 Eyewitness Profiles" that will include a segment on new Husky head coach Steve Sarkisian.
The program, which will feature sports stories, airs at 10 p.m. on channel 7 in the Seattle area (and throughout much of Washington via cable). Along with a piece on Sarkisian, the program also includes segments on new Seahawks head coach Jim Mora, Mariners manager Don Wakamatsu, local NASCAR truck racer Taylor Malsam and the Seattle Sounders FC. Here's a link to KIRO-TV's website with more information on the show: click here. Husky assistant coach Raphael Chillious has one of his former student-athletes from South Kent Prep featured in the upcoming issue of ESPN the Magazine. The story follows the journey of Rob Thomas, a current basketball player for St. John's University. He has overcome a learning disability, a serious injury and a tough upbringing to succeed at St. John's. Chillious is mentioned at several points in the article and can take a lot of credit for getting this young man on track in life and on the basketball court. Click here to read the complete story.
In case you missed it, there was some roster movement among former Washington players and their NFL teams over the weekend.
The biggest news was probably that Lawyer Milloy, a 13-year NFL veteran, signed with the Seattle Seahawks. Milloy, who was already living in the area, didn't attend training camp with any team, but the four-time Pro Bowler from Tacoma now gets a chance to play for his hometown team. Here's a story from today's Seattle Times. Milloy was joined on the 'Hawks' roster by another former Husky DB, Roy Lewis, who was added to Seattle's practice squad. The Associated Press' Gregg Bell has this story. Further afield, former UW quarterback and Garfield High product Isaiah Stanback was cut by the Cowboys, but was quickly placed on the Patriots' practice squad. Here's a story from the Dallas side of things. Included in this story is a note that two former Dawgs, Greyson Gunheim and Marcel Reece, were named to the Oakland Raiders' practice squad. Calgary, Alb., Canada -- Husky alum Paige Mackenzie has dropped into a tie for 46th place in the LPGA's CN Canadian Open at Priddis Golf and Country Club. Mackenzie shot a 3-over 74 in Saturday's third round and dropped 16 spots in the overall standings. Mackenzie has a 215 overall. Suzann Peterson is 14-under to lead the tournament.
Hello Dawg fans! Check back here throughout the day and during the entire UW-LSU game for updates from Seattle and Husky Stadium, as the GoHuskies.com Dawg Blawg kicks off the season with a bang! Also, send us your feedback throughout the day and we'll post some of your questions/comments. Huskies Fall 31-23: Valiant effort by the home team tonight, but ultimately, LSU's speed and poise down the stretch helped them win. You can watch Steve Sarkisian's post-game press conference by clicking here, but you must have a paid subscription to watch. 9:54 - BLAWG hiatus due to work duties. Back later End of 3: Corey Dillon is tonight's Husky Legend. Attendance is 69,161. UW is 11 points down, but by no means out of the game. They have been able to move the ball at times, but struggled in the third quarter. They'll have to be able to start moving the ball here to get some momentum back on their side. Clock - 5:50: LSU takes a 24-13 lead after a 39-yard hook up between Jordan Jefferson and Terrance Toliver, the second time this evening they have connected. Dawgs find themselves down by 11 points. Third Quarter - 6:31 After a relatively slow first half, things are moving along in the second half pretty quickly. After a 3-and-out by LSU, UW had the ball for a short drive before stalling. Now LSU is marching into Husky territory. If you aren't at Husky Stadium or watching at home, you are missing a great game so far! Halftime: The Husky Alumni Marching Band is playing Jimmy Buffett right now. A 37-yard field goal by Erik Folk as the clock expired narrows LSU's lead to 17-13. The big difference is the game are two big Husky turnovers in the first half, one which gave up a touchdown and another that came with the Huskies knocking on the door for at least a field goal attempt. After a shaky start, Jake Locker finished the first half with 183 yards passing on 11-of-20 attempts. The real nice discoveries of the first half were Chris Polk, who ran for 82 yards on 12 carries. Also, true freshman James Johnson led the UW with four receptions. Also, you have to give a thumbs up to the offensive line for busting holes open for the Huskies. The defense also had a good first half. UW has 296 total yards of offense, while LSU has 160. Besides the big play for a touchdown late in the second quarter, they have done a very admirable job. Clock - 1:15: The Tigers jumped back on top with a 45-yard TD strike by Jordan Jefferson to Terrance Toliver. LSU now leads 17-10 with 1:15 remaining. Clock - 3:49: Four Husky true freshmen have played so far: James Johnson, Desmond Trufant, Demetrious Bronson and Semisi Tokolahi. Clock - 5:51: The Huskies are six of seven on third down conversions. Clock - 12:03: Personal fouls in two of the last three plays by the Huskies' defense has helped LSU march the ball down field. But the Huskies are hoping to catch a break of their own as Charles Scott appeared to have fumbled on the very next carry and the officials will review the play. THE HUSKIES WON THE REVIEW! Washington football. 13:50 - 2nd quarter: Erik Folk hit a 34-yard field goal, his first career attempt, to knot the game up at 10-10. On second and long, it looked like LSU got away with interference on James Johnson, and Willie Griffin ran the ball just one yard short on third down, forcing UW to settle for the three. End of 1st quarter: It was a long one and the big plays so far stand to be the two Husky turnovers. But, one of the nice revelations, was the running of Chris Polk, who gained 66 yards on seven carries. Clock - 5:49: First LSU got three back with a 24-yard field goal by Josh Jasper. The Huskies had a great defensive stand after allowing LSU to march all the way down to the five-yard line and were held out of the end zone. LSU's Jacob Cutera then picked off Jake Locker's first pass of the ensuing drive and took it back 29-yards for the go-ahead score. It is now LSU 10, UW 7. Clock - 8:12: Darrion Jones had to be helped off the field with an apparent right leg injury. Kelani Aldrich came into replace him. Clock - 10:35: 10 play 85 yard drive capped by a Jake Locker to James Johnson 17-yard touchdown!!! Johnson's first career catch is a big one. The Huskies are all huddled on he sideline together and ready to unveil their 2009 defense. UW 7, LSU 0. 7:35 p.m.: Momemnt before kickoff. The Huskies won the toss and elected to receive. At about the 25 yard line senior linebacker Trenton Tuiasosopo gathered about 15 of the Polynesian players and got the group pumped up for the game. Let's get this game rolling!!! 7:30 p.m.: The National Anthem has just been completed by the Husky Marching Band and we're just moments away from both teams taking the field and kicking off the 2009 season. The captains are taking the field right now for LSU and the UW captains should be shortly behind. 7:07 p.m.: Both are on the field doing team drills. The Husky Marching Band is starting to gather and ready to take the field! Almost time for Husky fans to get in your seats! 27:00 minutes on the scoreboard clock. Starting lineups are being shown on the JumboTron and it is pretty cool, as each player is introducing themselves. LSU is leaving the field right now with 24:00 minutes on the clock! 6:35 p.m.:An hour before kickoff and some fans are already in the stadium. The parking lot is packed with fans and there is a line to get into The Zone. On the field there are several players from both squads, mostly special teams players and quarterbacks. LSU's band just arrived and was greeted by their contigent warmly of course. Just a few more minutes before all players will be taking the field for warm ups! In news outside of the game, former Husky safety Lawyer Milloy signed with the Seattle Seahawks toda! Well, the parking lots and The Zone are starting to get jumping. Just two hours from kickoff! About an hour ago I went through the locker room, down the Husky tunnel onto the field and cruised over to the zone. I got some pictures, including inside the locker room, the Curtis Williams memorial, shots of the field and pictures of the zone. I have to say, The Zone is going to be a GREAT alternative for those who want to tailgate closer to the Stadium. There are some excellent choices for eating, KJR is stationed in there as is KUBE, playing some tunes. There are plenty of activities for kids and adults as there is a huge covered beer garden. Also, there are suites that are set up for groups. Take a look at the updated Pre-Game Photo Gallery that now includes photos of all the above described!
I arrived at Husky Stadium around 2:30 and things are starting to pick up. Cruised around E-11 and E-12 with the iPhone and took several shots of the tailgating in the parking lot. Click Here to view the early festivities from the parking lots around Husky Stadium.

Former Washington All-American Robert Kendrick saw his U.S. Open singles run come to an end yesterday in the second round, but advanced to the second round in the doubles draw. Kendrick faced another seasoned veteran in singles, 20th-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany, a former top-five player and Grand Slam semifinalist. Every set was close, but Haas was a little better in each one, winning 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3). The second round appearance matched Kendrick's career best. In the first round of doubles play, Kendrick and teammate Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia earned a straight-set 6-3, 6-4 win over former NCAA Champion Benjamin Becker and Igor Kunitsyn. Next they will face Rik de Voest and another American, Rajeev Ram. Kendrick was also entered in the mixed doubles draw with Abigail Spears but the two lost their first round match. A few enterprising Husky fans took it upon themselves to decorate a well-known statue in the Fremont neighborhood recently.
The Washington Husky football team opens its season Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. game against 11th-ranked LSU. Apparently, there is some truth to the rumor that some Tiger fans witnessed the decorating and were kind enough to provide some creative "feedback" to the artists.
Mackenzie had five birdies on her second nine of the day (six overall) to put her in contention. She will tee off at 1:40 pm local time from the No. 1 tee on Friday. Louis Frieberg shot a 3-over 74 and is tied for 99th, while Amber Prange shot a +4 and tied for 113th. Prange is making her LPGA debut.
Meet Dubs, the new live mascot for the University of Washington tonight at 10:30 p.m. on KING 5's Evening Magazine. The show will provide an up-close and personal look at the 10-month-old mascot just hours before he makes his debut this weekend when the Washington football team hosts LSU (7:30 p.m. PT). Find out what why he was chosen, what mascot training camp is like and if the cheerleaders feel threatened by his beauty. New coach, new attitude, new DAWG!
The Washington baseball schedule for the upcoming 2010 season has been posted here at gohuskies.com.
Click here to have a look. The Diamond Dawgs, under first-year head coach Lindsay Meggs have a varied non-league schedule that includes hosting a tournament in Tucson, Ariz., plus home dates against Cal State Fullerton and Gonzaga, plus a home game vs. Seattle U., which is back and playing baseball for the first time in more than two decades. Road trips include visits to Long Beach State, BYU and Dallas Baptist. In conference play, the Huskies play host to cross-state rival Washington State, Arizona, Stanford, UCLA and Oregon. The Huskies will begin fall practice in a couple of weeks.
Mackenzie is coming off a top-10 finish in last week's Safeway Classic. She is teeing off from the 10th tee at 8:00 a.m. local time. Friberg, who failed to make the cut at the Safeway Classic, tees off at 8:40 a.m. from the No. 1 tee. Prange is making her first appearance in an LPGA event. She received a sponsors exemption after finishing third in the 2009 Order of Merit. Prange will tee off at 7:40 a.m. from the 10th tee. Return to the GoHuskies.com women's golf page Thursday through Sunday as we will keep you posted on the progress of the Huskies competing this weekend. Good luck to all!!!
Other noticeable changes in the stadium for Saturday will be the addition of The Zone on the east practice field (enter FREE at the southeast corner of Husky Stadium) and the temporary location of the ticket windows in the Northwest Plaza - next to the Husky Team Shop in Bank of America Arena at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
Here's a handy link for transportation options to Husky Stadium:
UW Athletics Transportation Page Click on the links to find out more information on getting to the game, whether by car, by bus or by bicycle. Also, remember that The Zone opens at 1:00 p.m., well ahead of the 7:30 p.m. kickoff. Here's more information on The Zone. Former UW All-American Robert Kendrick is through to the second round at the U.S. Open, matching his best showing in a major. Yesterday, Kendrick scored a routine 6-3, 6-2, 6-2 victory over Martin Vassallo Arguello setting up a second-round match with 20th-seed Tommy Haas, the veteran German who has been ranked in the top-five in the world. Kendrick is currently ranked 77th and is the seventh among Americans. Vassallo Arguello is 52nd in the world rankings, so the win constituted a bit of an upset, although Kendrick and most Americans in general are better suited to playing on hard courts like at the U.S. Open. Kendrick is also entered in the doubles draw, teaming up with Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia. The two will play Benjamin Becker and Igor Kunitsyn in the first round. And if two draws weren't enough, Kendrick will be playing mixed doubles as well with American Abigail Spears. This is Kendrick's fourth-consecutive U.S. Open appearance and his fifth all-time. Last year he reached the second round as well before losing to eventual finalist Novak Djokovic in round two. One of his career highlights was reaching the doubles quarterfinals in 2007 with Sam Querrey. Kendrick was a singles and doubles All-American for UW coach Matt Anger in 1999 and was ranked as high as No. 3 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
While we are on the subject of Game Day, become a Facebook fan of The Zone - the UW's newest pregame tailgate party. The Zone opens at 1 p.m. on Saturday and will feature food, beverages (alcoholic and non), music, big screen television, a Kids Zone and more. Football season hasn't even started and we're already seeing prognostications for the upcoming college basketball season. The Big Daddy -- ESPN -- came out with their look at the Pac-10 Conference and has Washington listed as finishing second behind California. More exactly, Doug Gottlieb has the Huskies picked second. In the same article, Andy Katz, has a quick look around at each team in the league. The resounding theme of both authors is that UW's guard play will be intriguing and replacing Jon Brockman will be the biggest question mark. Also, Abdul Gaddy is listed as both Washington's key player to watch and freshman that we can't wait to see. For those keeping track at home, the Husky players report on Sept. 14 and will begin practicing officially in October. • ESPN's Pac-10 ShootaroundIMPORTANT LINKSMOST RECENT POSTS
