SEATTLE – The 22nd varsity sport at the University of Washington, sand volleyball, is ready to make its debut this Saturday against a trio of Northwest rivals also new to the sport. The Huskies will travel to Portland, competing at The Courts at Eastmoreland, against Oregon, Boise State, and Portland State. Tickets will be $5 per person and seating is limited.
This will be the only date of competition for the Huskies this season, as UW phases in the program progressively. Washington played its first intrasquad scrimmage this past Saturday at Golden Gardens, and has been practicing since the beginning of February.
The Courts at Eastmoreland are part of the Eastmoreland Racquet Club in southeast Portland. Four courts will be in use throughout the day starting at 10 a.m. and wrapping up around 4 p.m.
The matches against the Ducks and Broncos will be full five-team dual matches, with five different two-person teams going against each other and each match earning one point towards the team score. Best out of five takes the match. Washington will not have a full match against Portland State, but three UW pairs will play three PSU pairs.
First up will be the Huskies against the Ducks starting at 10 a.m. The No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5 matches will start at 10, and the No. 1 and No. 2 matches will get underway at 11 a.m.
At 12 noon, UW will have one match going against Portland State, and then two more starting at 1 p.m.
The match against the Broncos starts at 2 p.m. with the Nos. 3-5 matches, and the top two pairs will start at 3 p.m.
Oregon is also in the first year of its sand program, and has already played eight matches, going 1-7 so far. Boise State has a 2-3 record so far with wins over Cal Poly and Sacramento State.
