Another Husky Stadium Marvel: The New UW Medicine Sports Medicine Center

There is one more gem under the south sideline stands of new Husky Stadium, beneath the new roof, new press box, new suites and new, closer-than-ever seating.

A 30,660-square-foot, state-of-the-art UW Medicine Sports Medicine Center (SMC) is opening this month along with the renovated stadium.

The new Center, which the UW Board of Regents approved in 2010 to be included for $11 million into the total, $261 million stadium renovation budget, is more than five times the size of the previous UW Medicine Center. That former, 6,000-square-foot facility was located beyond the opposite side of the stadium, on the northeast side of Alaska Airlines Arena.

A multidisciplinary healthcare team of UW Medicine physicians and staff will provide a full range of outpatient services including diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation beneath the new stadium. And the SMC is truly a community asset. The Center will be open to the public as well as to UW student-athletes of all sports, continuing a long-standing partnership between UW Medicine and Huskies athletics. This partnership provides Washington student-athletes and patients from our ultra-active community high-quality, efficient healthcare.

Those patients will come from far beyond Seattle. As important as this facility will be for Husky football players and UW student-athletes, it is also a public asset. For years, opposing players, professional athletes such as Seahawks, Mariners and Sounders, even pros from across the country have received innovative treatment from UW Medical Center.

Now even more will be attracted to Washington’s renowned care and rehabilitation by this expansive and modern sports-medicine facility.

“The newly designed facility gives us the opportunity to provide patient-centered care in efficiently designed examination rooms and diagnostic areas,” said Johnese Spisso, the chief health system officer for UW Medicine and the vice president for UW’s medical affairs.

As Spisso noted, “the facility also includes space for patient education and teaching, as well as an expanded sports performance and physical therapy center.”

The Sports Medicine Center is connected to the new football operations center at the southwest end of new Husky Stadium. UW Medicine physicians and Husky athletic trainers will staff the football operations center.

There is also a new, 200-car parking garage under the south stands that on days other than those of home games will serve the athletic department plus patients seeking care in the UW Medicine Sports Medicine Center.

So roughly 40 percent of new stadium’s circumference -- the south and part of the west sides – will include a premier and innovative sports medicine facility.

“We’ve said it in every aspect of this Drive for Husky Stadium: Our student-athletes deserve the finest facilities in the country. So it is only fitting that our new Sports Medicine Center will be among the very best of any campus in the nation,” Huskies Director of Athletics Scott Woodward said.

“We are honored, privileged and in fact spoiled to have some of the finest medical personnel in the world here at UW Medicine. And I promise you, this facility will be as impressive as the people who will work inside it.”
