Who are Dubs and Harry the Husky?

Dubs and Harry the Husky are the official mascots of the University of Washington. Dubs is a 5-year old Alaskan Malamute who lives with a family in Seattle and Harry the Husky is the costumed mascot. Dubs needs handlers wherever he goes and Harry needs a handler for select events. Mascot Student-Handlers share the job of handling Dubs and Harry the Husky throughout the year.

Responsibilities

Accompany the mascot to Husky Athletic events, as well as other events both on and off campus.

Observe crowd and the environment for any safety issues and respond appropriately as needed.

Responsible for making sure the mascots stay on schedule at events.

Observe mascot’s body language for signs of stress and responds appropriately (i.e. enforce breaks).

Interact with fans in a friendly and knowledgeable manner. 

Required Qualifications  

The University of Washington Intercollegiate Athletics Department is looking for current University of Washington students experienced in working with live animals and people of all ages in both large and small scale events.

All candidates should possess the following skills and characteristics:

  • Highly motivated, creative, self-starter with excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • A positive leader and ambassador of the University of Washington.
  • Background or interest in dog behavior.
  • Physically able to handle a large dog (to include sprinting 100 yards).
All candidates will be expected to work 1-2 events per week for a 12-month period and must be able to work a flexible schedule, where selected evenings, weekends, and/or days are required.  Specific training related to working with Dubs will be provided and involves additional time outside of scheduled events.

  • Admission to selected Husky events when not performing duties.
  • $500 Student Handler Honorarium (payment after 12-month term).
