EDMONDS, Wash. – Mitch Bevacqua hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh inning to win the game for the Gold team, 5-4, and even the Purple & Gold World Series at one game apiece.
Andrew Ely walked to lead off the final inning at Triton Field on the campus of Edmonds Community College, advanced to second on a Robert Pehl single and was sacrificed to third to set up the freshman Bevacqua for the game-winning RBI. Bevacqua lifted the fly ball to deep center off losing pitcher Matthew Lunde.
Alex Nesbit escaped a bases-loaded jam of his own in the seventh inning to earn the win for the Gold team.
The Purple team drew first blood when Braden Bishop led off the game with a single and would come around to score on an Alex Schmidt sacrifice fly. It was the only run off of left-handed freshman Henry Baker, who struck out four and allowed just two hits in four strong innings of work.
The lead was short lived as the Gold team responded with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the first off starter Jared Fisher. Pehl plated a couple runs with a single up the middle and would score one out later on a Ryan Wiggins double.
The Gold team tacked on another run thanks to a lead-off homer from Brian Wolfe to make the score 4-1 after three innings.
The Purple team would tie things up in the top of the sixth after five consecutive singles led to three runs. All three runs came with two outs, capped by a tying single from Will Sparks.
Pehl and Wiggins had two hits apiece to pace the Gold team, while Sparks and Braden Bishop both had a pair of hits for the Purple squad.
The third game of the series is Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Titon Field, with the final game coming at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday at Everett's Memorial Stadium.
