WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Husky senior Joe Meggs was named to the second team and Ty Afenir, Andrew Ely, Robert Pehl, Jayce Ray and Zach Wright earned honorable mention as the Pac-12 released its Academic All-Conference teams today.
Meggs, who earned first-team honors in 2011 and second-team last year, boasts a 3.46 cumulative GPA in economics. He started all but one game this past season in left field and batted .298 for the 2013 season.
Another senior, Afenir was the Huskies' starting shortstop for the last three years. A medical anthropology & global health major with a 3.29 GPA, he also earned honorable mention in 2012.
Ely, the Huskies' sophomore starter at third base, has a 3.35 grade point average as a business administration major. He led the Huskies with a .338 batting average in 2013, starting 53 of 56 games.
Pehl was one of just two Huskies to start every game in 2013. A second baseman and DH, he batted .266 with a team-high 14 doubles, as well as 32 RBI while maintaining a 3.31 grade point average in health sciences.
The other Husky to start every game was senior outfielder Jayce Ray, who also earned honorable mention All-Pac-12 this year. Ray, who has a 3.10 GPA in sociology, led the UW in at bats (220), hits (68), runs (35), triples (four) and RBI (36).
Finally, Wright, a junior right-handed pitcher, set a school record with 33 appearances in 2013, going 4-5 with a 3.21 earned run average over 70 innings. He has a 3.09 GPA as a political science major.
