SEATTLE – While the Pac-12 conference volleyball schedule is still being firmed up, the Huskies have finalized their non-conference slate of matches for the fall, setting up one of the most exciting and challenging set of matches in recent years. Washington will play host to 2013 NCAA runner-up Wisconsin as well as traveling to play at BYU, a Round of 16 participant the last two seasons.
Washington and Wisconsin were on opposite sides of the Final Four in Seattle last fall, with the Badgers falling in four sets to Penn State in the national title match. They finished the year ranked No. 2 in the AVCA Top-25, while the Huskies finished No. 4. The match is part of a new four-team arrangement also featuring USC out of the Pac-12 and Maryland out of the Big Ten, with the Pac-12 teams facing the Big Ten teams at rotating sites each year. Seattle will be the first stop, with UW playing Maryland on Sept. 18 and Wisconsin on Sept. 19 in the non-conference finale.
A trip to Provo, Utah will also provide another big challenge as BYU finished last season ranked 13th by the AVCA, going 24-7 and losing in the NCAA regional semifinals to the Trojans. Washington will also play UMBC and Utah Valley in Provo after taking on the Cougars.
Washington will open the season on August 29 with the Northwest Challenge, which once again features Portland State, Gonzaga, and Boise State, with the Broncos hosting this year in Boise.
The first home date of 2014 will be September 11, when the Huskies face Seattle U. as part of The Invitational In Seattle. The next day, Sept. 12, Washington will have a double-header at Alaska Airlines Arena, hosting UC Davis at 1 p.m. and UNLV at 7 p.m.
The full season schedule should be official by late June.
