STANFORD, Calif. – The University of Washington women’s tennis stay at the UTSA/ITA Northwest Regionals ended this weekend in the round of 16 for Elianne Douglas-Miron and Riko Shimizu in the singles draw and for three doubles pairs.
Sophomore Douglas-Miron and junior Riko Shimizu battled from the opening singles round of 128 all the way to the final 16. In her first match, Douglas-Miron outlasted Pacific’s Christiana Ferrari (3-6; 6-2; 6-1) before taking down Sacramento State’s Katharina Knoebl (6-3; 6-0) and Maja Mladenovic of Portland (6-3; 6-3). In the round of 16, Douglas-Miron faced 44th-ranked Lynn Chi of California in a very tightly contested match with Chi coming out on top, 7-6 (7); 7-6 (2).
Shimizu advanced past Cal Poly’s Malavika Padmanabhan, 3-6; 6-1; 6-1 in the opening round before breezing past UC-Davis’ Megan Heneghan, 6-0; 6-2 in the round of 64. After moving past Marie Klocker of San jose State, 6-3; 4-6; 6-3, Shimizu fell to St. Mary’s Jenny Jullien, 6-3; 6-0.
The pair were also a doubles team during the tournament, which served as a qualifier for the ITA Indoors next month. After receiving a bye in the first round, they topped Fresno’s Sofya Malysheva and Rana Sherif Ahmed, 8-1 before being defeated 8-4 by St. Mary’s Jade Frampton and Audrey Leitz in the round of 16.
Joining Douglas-Miron and Shimizu in the doubles round of 16 were the pairs of Angela Chen/Briana Kemp and Juliju Lukac/Andjela Nemcevic. Chen and Kemp received a bye in the first round before defeating Malavika Padmanabhan and Kathryn Webb of Cal Poly, 8-7 (4). The pair fell in the round of 16 to second-seeded and 17th-ranked Kristie Ahn and Carol Zhao of Stanford.
Lukac and Nemcevic easily moved out of the first round with an 8-2 victory over UC-Davis’ Claire jaramishian and Claire Meunier. They advanced past an Oregon team in the round of 32 before being defeated by Danielle Flores and Jenny Jullien of St. Mary’s, 8-5.
Up next for the Huskies is the UTSA Collegiate Invitational in Beaverton, Ore., Nov. 1-3.
