SEATTLE – The University of Washington men’s tennis team hosted a rare double header Saturday afternoon and picked up a 7-0 victory against Eastern Washington but fell to the top-ranked USC Trojans, 6-1. The Huskies are now 9-9, 0-2 in Pac-12 play, and next host Arizona on Friday, April 4 at 11:30 a.m.

UW’s Emmett Egger highlighted play for the Dawgs against the top-ranked Trojans as he defeated the third-ranked player in the country. After dropping the close first set 7-6 (7-5) against Raymond Sarmiento, Egger bounced back and won the second set 6-3 before taking the 10-point tiebreaker, 10-4 for the point.

“Emmett has had his ups and downs this year but he’s been doing much better the last few weeks,” said head coach Matt Anger. “He’s been coming on, I’m excited for him about this upcoming stretch to finish the season. He’s playing more and more points to his strengths.”

The Trojans claimed the doubles point with 8-5, 8-3 wins on courts one and two, respectively, then clinched the match with victories on courts one, four and three. Max Manthou fell to 12th-ranked Yannick Hanfmann, 6-0, 6-3 at the number one spot while Hawke fell to No. 100 Max de Vroome, 6-3, 6-3. On court six, Michael Chamerski lost a close battle to number 44 Jonny Wang, 7-5, 6-4.

“They’re number one in the country so they’re tough for anybody,” added Anger. “Other than second doubles, I thought we came out really good with plenty of opportunities at one doubles and just couldn’t quite get it. In singles, there was a lot of good, tight, close tennis, but we didn’t get any first sets. There’s a reason they’re doing well and ranked number one. They were able to play their kind of tennis on the big points.”

In the nightcap against the Eagles, the Dawgs easily claimed the doubles point with Max Manthou and Viktor Farkas cruising to an 8-2 win on court one followed by Jeff Hawke and Dragos Puscalau’s 8-4 win on court two.

The Dawgs continued their strong play against EWU in singles action with Manthou claiming a 6-1, 6-2 decision on court two. Chamerski and Farkas followed that up with 6-2, 6-2 victories on courts five and four while Daffra Sanon claimed a 6-3, 6-1 win on court six and Gal Hakak cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 victory on court three. Egger, fresh off of his win against the Trojans, lost his first set, 6-4, but responded with a 6-1 win the second set and an 11-9 decision in the 10-point tiebreak.

“I was happy for Max and Viktor to get a win in doubles, they finished better and improved during the day,” said Anger. “It was also great for us to get Dragos out there in doubles action. Daffra is right there with everyone else on the team so it was good for him to get both the doubles and singles wins.”

The Huskies next host Arizona at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 4 which will be televised on the Pac-12 Networks.
