SEATTLE – The University of Washington men’s tennis team easily handled Gonzaga Friday after noon, cruising to a 7-0 victory over the Bulldogs on the Bill Quillian Tennis Courts. Washington moves to 8-7 on the season and will have next week to prepare for finals before opening Pac-12 play against UCLA (March 28) and USC (March 29) at home.
The Huskies opened up the day by taking the doubles point. Jeff Hawke and Wendell Watanabe won on court three, 8-4, but Gonzaga responded quickly with a 8-7 win on court one over Viktor Farkas and Max Manthou. Freshman Michael Chamerski and Emmett Egger clinched it though for the Huskies with an 8-6 victory on court two.
Heading into singles play, the Huskies quickly claimed the victory with courts three through six earning two-set wins. Egger got things started for the Dawgs with a 6-2, 6-2 victory on court three. Viktor Farkas followed that up with a 6-0, 6-0 win on court five to extend his winning streak to three and his overall record on the season to 7-4.
Rish Raman, playing just his second singles match of the season, picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win on court six to clinch the match for the Dawgs. Jeff Hawke, Gal Hakak and Max Manthou all picked up wins with Hakak and Manthou’s matches being decided by a 10-point tiebreak as the Huskies had already claimed the win.
The Dawgs will take next weekend off during the finals break before starting Pac-12 play against UCLA (March 28) and USC (March 29) at home.
