SEATTLE – University of Washington Men’s Tennis Coach Matt Anger announced the signing of Mitch Stewart and Jake Douglas to National Letters of Intent on Wednesday. The pair will suit up in purple and gold starting in the 2014-15 season.

“I’m ecstatic about signing Mitch and Jake,” said Anger. “With the way these two work and compete, the sky is the limit for us during their careers here at Washington.”

Stewart, from Federal Way, is currently ranked third in the United States by the U.S. Tennis Association and is fifth according to Tennisrecruiting.net. He was the 16-and-under champion at the National Clay Court Championshipsand finished third at the National Hard Court Championships in 2012. Stewart was a doubles champion at the 2013 Spring National Championships and is the reigning State 4A Champion (2012 and 2013).

“I think that both Mitch and I have been counting down to this day for a long long time,” said Anger. “He already bleeds purple.  His strengths are off the charts and without putting any pressure on him, I believe he is going to have an incredible collegiate career.”

Douglas will join the Huskies from Rolling Hills, California where he attended Palos Verdes High School. The five-star rated incoming freshman is ranked 43rd nationally for the 2014 class. Douglas, who attends the same high school that tennis hall of famer Pete Sampras attended, is also ranked ninth in the state of California.

“Jake is a former teammate of current Husky Jeff Hawke at P.V. High and they will be reunited here at Washington,” said Anger. “He is a very tough competitor that is coming on strong and will be in the mix for us right away.”
