No. 8 Washington will compete in the NCAA Championship at Prairie Dunes Golf Course in Hutchinson, Kansas, on May 23-28. The Dawgs will be looking for their first NCAA title in program history. Three times Washington has advanced to the match play portion of the tournament in the current format, but each time the Dawgs were eliminated in the quarterfinals. The Huskies top finish in stroke play is third, coming in both 2005 and 2009. A year ago, UW placed 16th in stroke play and did not advance. Washington is coming off a runner-up finish at the Raleigh Regional led by an individual win from Jonathan Sanders. The Dawgs have earned the No. 7 seed in this year’s NCAA Championships.

Husky Coach Matt Thurmond is going with the same lineup he used at Regionals. It includes four players ranked in the top-100 by Golfstat: No. 30 Cheng-Tsung Pan, No. 50 Trevor Simsby, No. 85 Corey Pereira and No. 99 Sanders. Also competing for the Dawgs will be Chris Babcock. Pan was a semifinalist for the Hogan Award given to the top player in college golf, while also recently qualifying for the British Open for what will be his third career major championship. He recently finished as the runner-up at the Pac-12 Championships. Simsby has four top-10’s this year and a team-best 11 rounds in the 60’s. Pereira has had a strong freshman season with five top-10’s, including his eighth-place finish at the Pac-12 Championships. Sanders has been the Dawgs hottest player this spring with five top-10’s in his last six tournaments, including wins at the Bandon Dunes Championship and the Raleigh Regional. Finally, Babcock is coming off a T-26th finish at the Pac-12 Championships and a T-32nd finish at regionals.
Washington has just one win this season, coming back in September at the Kikkor Husky Invitational. Despite having just a single victory, the Dawgs have been in contention almost every week. The Dawgs have seven runner-up finishes, including at the Pac-12 Championships and the Raleigh Regional and have placed outside of the top four only once. The Dawgs have three individual wins with Pan at the Kikkor Husky Invitational and Sanders at the Bandon Dunes Championship and the Raleigh Regional.
Prairie Dunes is an American original located in Hutchinson, Kan., the center of the United States, and the last place anyone would expect to find a links style course with rolling hills reminiscent of the seaside courses in Scotland.
