SEATTLE – Four Husky men’s golfers participated in local U.S. Open qualifiers on Monday with great results. Jonathan Sanders and Corey Pereira each won their qualifiers, while Chris Babcock also advanced from his local qualifier to the sectional qualifying.
Pereria finished in a tie for first with another amateur, Paul Smith, at the Fresno qualifier. The Husky freshman shot a round of 5-under 67 at Fort Washington Golf and Country Club to advance to the sectional.
Sanders also won his local qualifier in Valencia, Calif. Playing at TPC at Valencia, Sanders shot a round of 5-under 67 to win by two strokes and also advance to the sectional.
The third Husky to advance was Babcock after firing a round of 3-under 69. Playing at Royal Oaks Country Club in Vancouver, Wash., Babcock finished in a tie for fourth. Trevor Simsby also played in this qualifier, but did not advance after a round of 2-over 74 to tie for 34th.
Cheng-Tsung Pan did not need to compete in a local qualifier since he is automatically qualified through to the sectional as one of the top-50 ranked amateurs in the world. With the inclusion of Pan, a total of four current Huskies will play in the sectionals in early June. Several other Huskies have yet to compete in a local qualifier and will do so later this month.
As a team, the Dawgs learned Monday that they earned the No. 2 seed at the NCAA Regional in Raleigh, N.C. The Huskies will compete on May 15-17 with a chance to advance to the NCAA Championships.
