SEATTLE – No. 12 Washington wraps up the fall season this week at the Gifford Collegiate on November 4-5. The Dawgs will face another elite field at The Resort at Pelican Hill’s North Course in Newport Beach, Calif., for a tournament hosted by UCLA.
The Dawgs are coming off a 10th-place finish at the United State Collegiate in Atlanta where Washington faced 15 of the best teams in the nation. The Dawgs hung tough against likely the top field they will face this season, despite being without top player Cheng-Tsung Pan who was away from the team preparing for the Asia-Pacific Amateur. Pan would place tied for eighth at that tournament and now brings his game back to the Husky lineup.
Pan will be joined by Trevor Simsby, Corey Pereira, Gerrit Chambers and Jonathan Sanders in the Husky lineup this week. Simsby is coming off an impressive top-20 finish at the U.S. Collegiate, filling in for Pan as the Huskies No. 1. Pereira was 23rd at the U.S. Collegiate to continue his exciting freshman season. Chambers and Sanders fought through a difficult week of qualifying to earn the final two spots on the Husky squad this week.
Washington will face a 10-team field this week that includes host No. 14 UCLA and top-ranked Alabama, as well as Coastal Carolina, Lamar, Oregon, Northwestern, SMU, Tennessee and USC.
Monday, the teams will play 36 holes beginning at 7 a.m. off both the first and 10th tees. Tuesday’s 18-hole final round will begin at the same time.
Pelican Hill is a 6,985-yard par 70 and will be hosting the Gifford Collegiate for the first time. Previously, UCLA’s tournament was hosted at CordeValle Country Club in San Marin, Calif., but will now alternate between Pelican Hill and CordeValle. UCLA is the defending champion and has won the tournament four times. USC and Stanford also each have two titles in the eight-year history of the tournament.
