-- Charlie Hughes beat Ian Davis 3&2 in the round of 64 during U.S. Amateur Championship match play on Wednesday at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. He moves on to face Sebastian Cappelen of Denmark in Thursday's round of 32.

Hughes, the No. 15 seed, never trailed against Davis, a sophomore at Oklahoma State. The match was all square after 11 holes before Hughes, a 2013 UW grad, made his move. He won holes 11, 13 and 14 to go 3up before closing the match out on the 16th hole.

Husky junior Gerrit Chambers also advanced to match play but dropped a 4&3 decision to Matt Fitzpatrick of England. Fitzpatrick, No. 2 in the World Amateur Rankings behind top-ranked Cheng-Tsung Pan, never trailed in his victory. He carried a 2up lead over Chamber at the turn and upped it to four by the 13th hole before closing out the match on the 15th hole.

Chambers survived a 17-man playoff in the morning with 15 golfers advancing to match play.

Play continues on Thursday. Golfers will participate in the Round of 32 in the morning followed by the Round of 16 for those that advance.
