TEMPE, Ariz. – The third-ranked Huskies (6-0) defeated the Illinois State Redbirds, 9-1, in six innings on Friday morning at the Littlewood Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Kaitlin Inglesby pitched all 6.0 innings for her 58th career complete-game, and Kylee Lahners hit her 4th home run of the season to give the Huskies the lead for good.
The Redbirds (1-4) got a run off Inglesby in top of the 1st inning, but it would be all she allowed for the rest of the game. Inglesby (3-0) retired 14 of the last 16 batters that she faced in route to her third win of the season.
It was Inglesby who got the rally going in the bottom of the 1st. After Inglesby drew a two-out walk, Lahners blasted a two-run home run for her fourth home run of the season and her 14th and 15th RBI. Lahners finished the game 1-for-2, with two runs scored, one home run, two RBI, and one walk.
Inglesby cruised through the Redbirds lineup from there, recording three consecutive 1-2-3 innings. The Huskies broke the game open with a six-run 3rd inning. Victoria Hayward, Hooch Fagaly, and Inglesby each hit singles leading off the 3rd to load the bases for Lahners with nobody out. After a Lahners walk, Whitney Jones hit a two-run double and Ali Aguilar hit a two-run single to give the Huskies an 8-1 lead.
The Huskies added one more run in the bottom of the 6th on a RBI-single off the bat of Inglesby to send the Huskies to a 9-1 mercy rule victory. Although Hayward would have scored from 2nd base on Inglesby’s hit, only one run counted because of the 8-run mercy rule.
The Huskies (6-0) will play the San Jose State Spartans (6-0) later today at 1:30 p.m. (Pacific) at the Tempe Sports Complex.
