LAS VEGAS – The No. 3 Huskies opened the 2014 season with a 7-4 win over the No. 18 Baylor Bears at the UNLV/SportCo Kick-Off Classic in Las Vegas. Junior Kylee Lahners went 2-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Senior Bryana Walker got the start in the circle and picked up her first win of the season, pitching 4.0 innings.
The Huskies are now 9-1 in opening day games under head coach Heather Tarr.
The Huskies got on the board in the top of the 1st inning. Hooch Fagaly drew a one-out walk and advanced to 3rd base on a double by Kaitlin Inglebsy. Kelli Suguro then drove in Fagaly with a single to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.
In the 3rd inning, Marki Creger-Zier and Whitney Jones reached base with two out, and Jennie McNeill plated both with a double, extending the Huskies lead to 3-0.
Bayor cut the Huskies lead in the 3rd, as junior outfielder Kaitlyn Thumann hit a home run to right field. But the Huskies came right back in the 4th, as Kylee Lahners hit her first home run of the season extended the Huskies lead in the 4th, driving a 3-run home run to right field in the 4th, as the Huskies took a 6-1 lead.
Lahners drove in her fourth RBI of the game, with a single to score McNeill in the 5th, giving the Huskies a 7-2 lead. Baylor scored two runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, but the Huskies held off the Bears for a 7-4 victory.
The Huskies are schedule to play the San Diego Toreros at 1:30 p.m., but it may be delayed because of a preceding game at the UNLV/SportCo Kick-Off Classic. Be sure to follow Husky Softball on Twitter @UWSooftball for the latest schedule updates.
