SEATTLE – The Huskies will open the 2014 softball season with 5 exhibition games at the 6-team Fall Classic at Husky Softball Stadium on October 4 – 6, providing the first look at a UW team that returns its key contributors from last season’s third place finish at the Women’s College World Series.
Seniors Kaitlin Inglesby, Victoria Hayward, Bryana Walker, Marki Creger-Zier, Hooch Fagaly, Kelli Suguro, Kasey Stanchek, Whitney Jones, and Mercedes Wetmore return to lead the Huskies, bolstered by four incoming freshmen. The Huskies will take on 5 local teams –Bellevue College, Central Washington, Seattle University, Wenatchee Valley, and Western Washington - over the 3-day tournament.
The Huskies will play 5 games, starting with a 6:30 p.m. showdown with Bellevue College on Friday, October 4. On Saturday, the Huskies will host Seattle U at 3:00 p.m. and Wenatchee Valley at 5:00 p.m. The tournament will wrap up Sunday, with the Huskies playing a pair of in-state rivals. At 3:00 p.m., the Huskies will take on Central Washington, and at 5 p.m., in the final game of the tourney, they will play Western Washington.
The Huskies will be facing some familiar foes, as 5 UW softball alumnae are now on the coaching staffs at Western Washington and Bellevue College. They include: Amy Suiter, head coach, Western Washington, Jessica Vendoza, assistant coach, Western Washington, Leah Francis, head coach, Bellevue College, Rita Roach, assistant coach, Bellevue College, and Sarah Hyatt, assistant coach, Bellevue College.
Both UW games on Saturday will be Cancer Awareness Pink games, with the Huskies donning pink jerseys that will be featured in a silent auction at the stadium. All proceeds from the auction will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF), which provides funds for three doctors who conduct breast cancer research at the UW Medical Center and at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. By October, the BCRF will have awarded over $7 million in research grants to Seattle-area investigators.
The tournament will also be a fundraiser for the Husky Softball program, as 100 percent of the proceeds from ticket sales and concessions will go directly to the program. Admission is $16 for a weekend pass, $7 for a day pass, and $5 for children under 12. Students are admitted with a valid student ID card.
