Ken Shannon Invitational
May 9-10 - Husky Outdoor Track
SEATTLE - The Husky track team closes out its home schedule with the Ken Shannon Invitational this Saturday at the Husky Outdoor Track. It's a chance for many athletes to close the season with a PR, or for others it will be a final tune-up for the trio of championship meets to come.
A few events will take place on Friday, including the men's hammer throw, both the men's and women's javelin throws, and a combined 10,000-meters run. Saturday's field events will start at 10 a.m. with the women's long jump and the women's hammer. The first running events on Saturday start at 12 noon, with the meet expected to finish around 4 p.m.
The meet, which honors 30-year Husky Hall of Fame coach Ken Shannon, will wrap the regular season. Next week UW will be returning to Pullman for the second time this month for the Pac-12 Championships. From there the Huskies that make the top-48 cut will go to Fayetteville, Ark. for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships, and the NCAA Outdoor Championships will follow in Eugene in early June.
A few of the women's events to watch on Saturday include the 800-meters, with C.J. Smith and Erin Johnson running. Krista Armstead will run the 400m hurdles one week after winning the open 400-meters at the Dual Meet. The three Huskies who swept the women's pole vault last week - Diamara Planell Cruz, Elizabeth Quick, and Kristina Owsinski - will all jump. Alyx Toeaina and Bev Coleman will go in the shot put and hammer throw and Ashley Alexander and Koryn Andrus look to extend their PRs in the javelin.
The men's 100-meter top heat will feature sophomore Travis Marshall, senior Matt Anthony in his final home appearance, and freshman Lucas Strong. Another senior running for the last time at home will be Colton Dunn in the 200m, joined by freshman Andrew Brown and Strong. Several of Dawgs are in the 1,500-meters including Derrick Daigre, senior Brad Whitley, and Hap Emmons. Chris Williams and another senior, Howard Lao, are set to go in the 110m hurdles, and Kaid Tipton and Devin Liebel will run the 400m hurdles.
Jax Thoirs, J.J. Juilfs, and Williams will look to sharpen their pole vault technique a week out from Pac-12s. Kasen Covington is entered in the triple jump in his final home appearance, and Julian Bardwell will also have his final home competition in the triple and long jumps. In the throws, Jack Scheideman will throw the shot and hammer, while Brian Hutchison will go in the shot and discus. Kyle White will also toss the hammer and Curtis Clauson will throw the javelin.
The Pac-12 Championships will begin in Pullman this weekend with the Multi-Event Championships. The only Husky who will make the trip is Nick Pfeiffer, to compete in the decathlon. Pfeiffer scored a career-best 6,840 points his last time finishing the decathlon at the Mt. SAC Relays. This will be his first Pac-12 appearance.
