WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – A great homecoming weekend for Katie Flood earned her the Pac-12 Women’s Track Athlete of the Week award, the conference announced today. Flood anchored two Washington relays to victory at the Drake Relays last weekend in her hometown of Des Moines, Iowa.
This is the first Pac-12 weekly honor for a Husky this season and the first since Flood last won the award in April of 2012.
Washington sent a large contingent of sprinters and mid-distance runners to the prestigious Drake Relays for the first time since 2004, and came away with four relay titles, two for the men and two for the women. Flood anchored the women to wins in the 4x1600-meter relay and the distance medley relay.
The blue track at Drake Stadium has been a site for numerous triumphs from Flood. She won six Drake Relays titles as a high school runner for Dowling Catholic High School, as well as several Iowa state titles on the track. Her last appearance there was in 2012, when she won the NCAA title at 1,500-meters.
The women’s 4x1600m relay was made up of junior Eleanor Fulton, freshman Katie Knight, junior Liberty Miller, and Flood, who closed out the win with a split of 4:41. In the distance medley relay, Flood held off Baylor with a final 1,600-meter split of 4:37. Knight started off the DMR with a great 1,200m carry, passing to Kayla Stueckle for 400-meters, then Fulton for 800-meters to hand to Flood.
Washington now rolls into Dual Meet Week, as the Huskies and Cougars will clash head to head this Saturday, May 3, in Pullman.
